Fb, Dead right. Maybe we need a batting coach? BTW, can anyone enlighten us about the search for Goodwin's successor?I spoke to Adam Matthews around 10 days ago about this issue. There is NO batting coach replacing Goodwin. Two months and that's it. No-more money left in the coaching budget!! Note also Jim May's audio interview with Adrian Harms www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/chairman-in-depth-interview-with-jim-may in which amongst much other waffle, he adroitly lays the responsibility on the "management team who have been give a budget....and have chosen whether to spend it on players or coaching". Pressed on what consitutes the management team, it seems to be Davisd "with input from" Wright, Greenfield, Jon Lewis, and of all people Johhny Barclay! It is a real connoisseur's edition of bankerly circumlocution, highly recommended for fans of "Don't blame me, I was the prudent one looking after the cash". He also tells us, but doesn't elaborate on the details, that Davis etc have a three-year plan. Whether that is to return Sussex to the First Division, to win the First Division, or to come last in all three competitions is not stated.

The original advert was for a batting coach/2nd XI coach, and not just for 3 months. Did they blow the whole budget on Goodwin's short stint?! So, we need a batting coach but we can't afford one. That's it, folks.

So is Barclay what in old-fashioned parlance used to be called 'Chairman of the Cricket Committee'? You see him around quite a bit, looking very louche and foppish; but I had no idea he was still pulling strings on the playing side. As for Davis's three year plan, Filby told me at the start of the season that he didn't expect Sussex to be the one side promoted this season but was looking for promotion in 2017. He also said that thanks to "Robbo's rich legacy" Sussex was by far the best team in Div Two (and quite possibly the best in the world) and relegation last season was due entirely to bad luck and injuries. I couldn't quite work that out. We are apparently the best team in the second tier and still a div one side in quality, but he wasn't expecting promotion until 2017? Life is full of such paradoxes.
