No longer even academically relevant to a Sussex promotion chase, this game could give Gloucestershire a leg up over Essex and Kent and the chasing pack of Leics and Worcs. Without stars, other than Klinger, Glos have a sturdy batting line up and plenty of medium and faster bowlers, most of whom have been more successful than any of the Sussex front line this season. It doesn't look like a first divison attack though and it would be hard to see them staying up if they did win promotion.
The last time the two sides played in the championship was at Arundel in 2010, Martin-Jenkins last game for Sussex, and I remember how determined he was to go out with a bang: 78 in two hours with 14 4s and two excellent wickets. Monty took 5 in the second innings to polish off Glos and gave an object lkesson in spin bowling to his oppoosite number Banerjee. Only Nash and Joyce of that team, who beat Glos by 8 wickets, are still playing, and Dent and Marshall for Glos.
As for this week's Sussex team I suppose the recovery of Machan and Finch from injuries will have some effect on the make-up of the team, otherwise it seems down to whim as to which of the Whittingham/Garton/Archer squadron is deployed to head the fleet of which Magoffin is still Commodore and Briggs Rear Admiral, with the light cruiser Jordan being deployed for the last time before steaming off to join the England one day flotilla for another interminable series that will stretch until well into September.

Christian Davis may get an oppertunity for this one if Finch or Machan are still injured.I have a feeling we'll prepare a spicy pitch for our quicks. Jordan, Weise, Magoffin will play, I'd rest Archer and Briggs and bring in Whittingham and Garton.

I will be keen to see how Wiese is in first-class cricket. Stats can be very misleading, but on the face of it, his 5 no balls and 2-96 in 31 overs looked the most disappointing of all the seamers. Incidentally, Jofra only bowled one wide and did not no-ball, in 51 overs, and took 4 wickets: much better control than his elders! I wouldn't rest him, though as I said, selection appears to be on whim.

The younger bowlers have all returned better figures than their elders all season! I don't think we'd pay Wiese to sit out, I think he'll play all the remaining games.
It's a great position to be in when you've got a pool of young quicks who are all performing to pick from. It's a shame the same can't be said about the batters.

Boats? The Navy? Navy boats? Oh I give up.
Wiese is a batting all-rounder more than a bowling all-rounder, according to my contact in Sussex, Jenna Taylior. 2-96 off 31 is better than all our other fifth bowlers - sounds about right to me. Bet he finishes with a higher batting average than the Zimbabwean Slayer did for us.
Rest Archer? No. He's 22 and he'll have just had a week off Joe. Play Garton, Whittingham and Archer.
HH is right about one thing when he ain't babbling about boats and ting - selection is on a whim. It's a *** lottery people.

Twelve named in the squad but Finch "...could be doubtful for Sussex’s remaining five fixtures after this one", or to put it another one, may not play again this season. Jofra Archer Danny Briggs Ben Brown (wkt) Christian Davis George Garton Chris Jordan Ed Joyce Steve Magoffin Chris Nash Luke Wells David Wiese Luke Wright (c) Garton apparently missed the last game because of sore shins. No word of Robinson, who also has suffered from sore shins, but took wickets and scored runs in the demolition of Surrey IIs last week. Hard to know who they will leave out, but presumably it will be a bowler and it won't be Wiese or Jordan and really should not be Archer. Magoffin, Garton, Briggs: perma any two from these. www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/preview-specsavers-county-championship-returns-to-hove-tomorrow

I'm surprised. But, on reflection I'm surprised I'm surprised. It's almost a question of 'spot the batsman' in the squads these days. Surely Briggs to miss out? Well surely not surely, obviously.

Garton won't play.
Nobody needs five seamers even in a five day test match. So Magoffin, Jordan, Archer and Wiese plus Briggs, with back-up from Wells and Nash.
Agree about 'spot the batsman', though.
Is Machan injured as well as Finch?
At least they haven't recalled Cachopa!
Don't know anything about Davis. I'd guess he will bat six with Brown moving up to five?

I can confirm Stuart W would have played, but sadly picked up an injury on Thursday afternoon.

I can confirm Stuart W would have played Instead of whom? Surely not Jofra, after his exploits in the last game with bat and ball. If true, it must mean they were about to drop Magoffin for the first time in his Sussex career? And if true, perhaps Garton will play and Mags will be the bowler left out?

Perhaps we've prepared a spicy wicket and intend to play 5 seamers? Gartons average at 39 is a lot better than Briggs at 63 anyway. Play the in-form players.
