Brown has conceded 62 byes in the last five Championship innings, this last not completed. Is that good?

Just the 28 extras so far. Make that 39.

Michael Klinger - best overseas signing in county cricket since Mushtaq? Discuss.
Only possible current rival : Wayne Madsen?

Will extras get his 50? Will Chris Jordan ever be consistent? Will Sussex ever win a game? Will we regret not playing a left arm quick?
All these and many more questions to be answered over the next three days, if anyone's still interested....

There'll come a time when Sussex will be great again. It won't be soon and most posters won't be alive to enjoy it, but it will happen.

Brown has conceded 62 byes in the last five Championship innings, this last not completed. Is that good? It would depend upon lots of things: the bounce in the wicket, whether the bowlers are delivering to the right length, are the slips properly placed, have the keeper and first slip worked out between them who goes for what, etc. It isn't a black and white thing eg Brown is a bad keeper because he gives away lots of byes but Bairstow is a great keeper because he gave away only 18 in an innings of 542". It is a good topic for discussion: what do you think, stonewall? What do others who have seen Sussex regularly this season think?

Probably, as the breed is dying out since the great days of Marsha, Greenidge, Imran, Richards..... Klinger played a really superb captain's innings against his normal attacking inclinations to foster first Mustard, then Taylor and later Miles.

There'll come a time when Sussex will be great again. It won't be soon and most posters won't be alive to enjoy it, but it will happen. Judging from the Kent experience - because I'd say Sussex are now exactly where Kent were circa 2010 - it may take six or seven seasons before the youngsters reach maturity and the side becomes competitive again, and I hope I will still be alive. By then Joyce, Magoffin and Nash will have retired. Wright will be 37/38 and may or may not still be here and Jordan will be 34/35, so should have finished his international career and be available full-time as a mature all-rounder. The senior batsmen should be Wells, Brown, Finch, Machan, Salt and Christian Davis and the bowling attack should be led by Archer, Whittingham and Garton. So the nucleus is there... But we don't have to go the Kent route and wait six or seven years. The Leicstershire model is actually more attractive and makes better sense, both on and off the field. Say goodbye and than you to the 'Zacster' (as I see he styles himself on Twitter) and recruit someone young and dynamic like Wasim Khan (preferably exactly like Wasim Khan by persuading him to come to Hove on an increased salary); a young overseas coach who won't accept failure like Andrew McDonald (or Jason Gillespie); a no-nonsense tough Aussie/Saffer captain with a burning desire to be a winner like Cosgrove (or Klinger or Madsen) and a bunch of experienced county pros out of sorts at their present counties and with a point to prove (like Horton, Dexter, Pettini, Shreck) who can also act as unofficial coaches and mentors to our rising stars such as Salt, Garton, Whittingham and Davis... The question is this - does the 'Mayster' have the guts/desire/motivation/vision to implement the radical overhaul required to turn Sussex from also-rans too ready to accept mediocrity back into a side of strivers and winners?

Probably, as the breed is dying out since the great days of Marsha, Greenidge, Imran, Richards..... They are there if you look for them. I can think of six currently playing in Div Two alone: Klinger, Madsen, Cosgrove, Ryder, Hogan, Magoffin (now qualified , of course)...all more useful than the fly-by-night overseas superstars who are still playing international cricket (Taylor/Mr Fizz) simply because they are available full-time. And if they combine availability with commitment to the cause, they are worth their weight in gold... I remember Marsha very fondly, by the way. Her version of Dr John's Walk On Guilded Splinters was great and that topless pic of her in Oz in 1970 was fantastic. (I see you still haven't worked out how to turn off predictive text!!!)
