The one thing Sussex do well this year is to surprise us with selections.
Davis: 22 year old, ex England U-19. Leeds-Bradford MCCU, Northants age group cricketg and second xi triallist, scored 65x for Leeds disunted agains Sussex at Hove in April, and 258 not out against Glamorgan (not Surrey) in the second xi championship game last week.
Machan: as the link shows, he is recovering from a wrist injury
Garton v Robinson in a 4 day match: you pays your money and you takes tour choice. I'd like both of them if they are fit. Ollie Robinson has batted very well this year, pulling his weight far more than most of the players above him, and if he can get back to fitness he is an excellent stock bowler with his best performances ahead of him. George Garton is a great prospect and great prospects need to be tested thoroughly.
Briggs v Magoffin: Who is going to get through the greatest amount of overs, with limited scoring off them, without expectations of a strike? Probably Briggs, sad to say.

If howard meant Whittngham had been told he was in the squad, rather than that he would definitely be in the XI, then I go back to my original contention: Garton won't play.
It's blindingly obvious. There is no wicket in the world on which anyone in their right mind plays FIVE seamers, unless it's Windies circa 1980 with the best quartet in the world and Collis King as the all-rounder who can bowl seam-up if needed.
I'm not a great fan of Briggs as a red-ball bowler but even I accept that he will - and indeed has to - play.

By the way, fraudster now has his answer as to why Garton and Whittingham don't play every match, even when ostensibly fit: we're told Garton has sore shins and Whittingham is also now injured. Young fast bowlers have to be handled with kid gloves or you risk destroying them.
The seam bowler whom you wind up in April and finally allow to rest in September - of which every county used to have two or three - is now rarer than hen's teeth. David Masters is one of the last representatives of the breed. Magoffin is the closest Sussex has because at his age he know what his body will permit him to do and what it will not. He has already bowled 309 overs in the CC this season. Next highest amiong the seamers in Robinson, who has bowled 120 overs fewer and still did his shins in while doing so...
Younger bowlers don't have either the self-knowledge or the physical maturity to withstand the pounding. The signing of Jordan was trashed on the old forum as a poor decsion because he had never been fit for Surrey. Then there was the Mills fiasco - and what the hell has happened to Shahzad? Now there's a bowler who has really fallen badly out of favour with the post-Robinson regime : never the same after last season's injuries and hasn't played a championship game since the beginning of July...

Fraudster never asked, wondered or queried why Garton and Whittingham don't play in every match. People used to exaggerate my point about home-grown players on the old board, saying I wanted 11 homies in the team - they were wrong, like you are now Borderman.
Don't be like them if you don't respect them fella. How many games has Garton played for Sussex this season? How many games in the last two months? How many CC games in the last three months? He is an England Lions player.
I would normally agree about the five seamers thing but it's different for us right now. We have two batters in the top six who can bowl spin about as well as our actual spinners. We have Wiese who is a batting all-rounder and, if I had my way, we would have three inexperienced young quicks playing in the same game. The last point alone is a good reason to play five seamers if it comes natural to your overall selection, as it does with us. Protect them with short bursts and rotation through five seamers and two part-time spinners. And on that note if we are not gonna sign an OS spinner we need to do what England have done with Ali, or Notts with Patel, and seriously work on Wells and Nash.
If Briggs has to play, so be it, as wasteful as it is but I say play Garton for Mags.

As I have a minute before I go trampolineing with my Gran, I'll put what I think is our best team down, when fit, and anyone who opposes it speak up or forever blah blah blah.
Nash Joyce Wells Finch Wright Wiese Brown Jordan Archer Garton Whittingham.
It bats deeper than any side we have put out this season, it has the most bowling options of any side we've put out this season and it plays our best wicket taking bowlers - what's the problem? Oh, and for the sake of Borderman, I would rotate my young walking wounded game by game with Robinson and Hatchett.
Good luck Sussex.
So long suckers.
Let's go Gran.

I say play Garton for Mags. Good job nobody listens to you. He's currently got three wickets for four runs and has reduced Glos to 19-3!

Confounding us all and making life awkward for the batsman back to his old best. Meanwhile Jofra replacing Jordan has found greater lift and combines coolness to outdoor Gayle with accuracy and determination to make the batsman play. Hampshire Marshall with hair bunched under his helmet looks the spit of the account guitarist.

Magoffin is actually seventh in the Div Two bowling avges of those who have taken more than 10 wkts.
Meanwhile Joyce may still have the chance to be the first man to 1000 championship runs. Keaton Jennings has just got out 8 runs short and the other contender Madsen is fielding at Derby ...

Great opening spell from Magoffin, something we've missed this season.

Just the 28 extras so far.

Just the 28 extras so far. But 10 of those are leg byes - not the fault of the bowler or fielders. IMO, leg byes should be abolished.
