Second place is now a strong possibility, although Glos might contest that up to to the final game, but there isn't much left for Worcs to aim at, rather surprisingly. I always assumed that they would be a major candidate for promotion, as they have been on the countless times they have dropped out of Div 1 before, but this year the challenge was never quite forceful enough. The batting hasn't quite come off although at didfferent times D'Oliveira, Clarke and Mitchell have had good matches, and something seems to have happened to Shantry this year, normally their most productive bowler.
On the other hand Sussex ought to go into this with renewed confidence, perhaps even a sigh of relief that the season is nearly over and the worst has not happened. Joyce is still available for this game and the big question is whether Wright will be fit to return. If he is presumably one of Salt and Hudson-Prentice will have another chance to show why they should have an extended contract. Jordan's return means that the balance of the side has to be changed. One of Wiese or Cachopa has to go to accomodate him and I doubt that it will be Wiese. He will have to show us how he got that first class average of 35 and those 9 hundreds. The bowling lacks variety but there is little that can be done about that now and it would be a harsh man who dropped any of Robinson, Archer or Magoffin after the Leicester game.
Joyce Nash Wells Wright Hudson-Prentice/Salt Brown Wiese Robinson Jordan Archer Magoffin
If Wright is still unfit then both of H-P and Salt should play.

Both Salt and H-P should get extended contracts regardless. We need young home-grown numbers and you have to give them a chance beyond three or four knocks at 19/20 years of age.

Still waiting for the Sussex squad announcement but Worcestershire's selection is pretty clear (note that 12th man to be confirmed) Mitchell D'Oliveira Fell Clarke Rhodes Kohler-Cadmore Cox Leach Barnard Cummins Morris 12th man to be confirmed. No Jack Shantry and alas no Moeen Ali - why should some players in England squads be parachuted into matches that had already begun (Billings) or given free reign to play for a group of games (Cook), but others held back alike from England and their partial employers (Jordan) while others are kept in cotton wool? Thers has to be some transparency about this and some workable rules developed to accompany the changes that the ECB would like to see happen to the English game, otherwise it will only serve as a further irritant to the diehards. Anyway, Worcesterhire are "...very respectful of the opposition and Sussex are a side that have done well of late and have got a strong squad there." Hope they're right. wccc.co.uk/news/kohler-cadmore-earns-recall-for-hove-encounter

Jofra Archer Danny Briggs Ben Brown (c/wkt) Craig Cachopa Fynn Hudson-Prentice Chris Jordan Ed Joyce Steve Magoffin Chris Nash Ollie Robinson Abi Sakande Phil Salt Luke Wells David Wiese
Sakande and Briggs can only be there either a) as cover for more injuries that haven't yet been declared, or b) to make them feel wanted. If the latter, its much more honest to be like Worcs and say "this is our best team at the moment"
Salt/Cachopa/Hudson-Prentice: perm any 2 from these.

Let's hope that if they forgo the toss and put us in, we haven't prepared a green top like the one against Kent.

Let's hope that if they forgo the toss and put us in, we haven't prepared a green top like the one against Kent. That is the problem with doing away with the toss and giving the opposition the chance of bowling first in September with heavy dews and wickets that have been overused throughout the summer. They may not be classical green tops - and we saw that the pitches prepared in April and May were very flat, to avoid this sanction - but there will always be a chance for bowling first innings, particularly if the conditions are humid. It should be a little easier this week with fresher winds, but the whole thing just underlines why we didn't used to play through September: it may feel warm but if the grass has stopped growing you aren't going to be able to guarantee even wickets.

Agree completely about the need for something a little more concrete from the ECB with regard to releasing players. While I can gather that every player is different and therefore have different needs the difference in treatment between players is irritating.
I agree with CP's team.

Worcester win the toss and bat first.
Nash Salt H-P Cachopa Brown Jordan Robinson Wiese Archer Briggs Magoffin
No Joyce? Perhaps he's already called it a day and remained in Ireland? No Wells? Out of contract, moving on? So the tail starts at 6 with 2 rookies and an out of form Cachopa in the top 5.

All over in one and half days?
