Shocking side. What's going on at Sussex? If Joyce had Ireland commitments why's he in the squad? It's difficult to find anything out from SCCC though. SSS would be a more apt name for the club at the moment.
You gotta give 20 year olds more of a chance than this Joe, especially at Sussex right now with our squad and funds in Christ knows what state. There's very little to lose in persisting and plenty to gain. Why he's opening is a strange one though but strange and Sussex go hand in hand these days.
Didn't we release a young Nick Gubbins a few years ago or did I imagine that?

It is completely absurd to write off a player at 20. Thank god you're not running the county. And what would you do if you were running it? Keep him in the second XI ad infinitum? Haseeb Mameed, Dan Lawrence, Jack Burnham and Aneruin Donald are all 19 and first pick batsmen for their counties. Not all players mature at the same rate. Matt Prior and Michael Yardy would have been released at 20 on your basis. You might get one of those players per county per generation.

Yes, with a big playing budget and lots to chose from but unfortunately Sussex don't have either of those luxuries.

How many supporters will stick around for the end of Mr Davis's five year plan. Grim

Our injuries are beyond bad luck, in my view.
The list of players not cutting it at 20 is endless. There are players we need to release but they cannot be young inexpensive ones like H-P. We happily give experienced outsiders two or three seasons around the firsts but curiously don't afford the same luxuries to lads we've nurtured since they were about 12. Criminal way of working.

Notice both Beer and Shazad in seconds at Blackstone but neither bowled during Durhams 403. I was not at Hove today, any obvious reason for their lack of a bowl, such as 12th man or alike. At Hove. Just seems strange.

I think Gubbins played his cricket in Sussex, mainly for Stirlands, probably for about five years. There were a lot on here who were in favour of giving him a game, but as far as I know, he was at the Middlesex Academy from an early age

Evening Sussex folk. I was at Hove this morning and then left for Blackstone after lunch. Beautiful ground in amazing countryside. Saw Shahzad nursing a very large bruised toe. Seems he took a whack from a ball on it and was off the field having it iced. Seems to have been unlucky with injuries this season!
Last visit to Hove for the season. Wishing all my Sussex friends the best for the Winter see you next season.

Lh,
Thank you for your kind post. Blackstone is a great place. I used to bowl for Woodmancote CC back in the 1970s and played on what is now a far more elegant southern pitch. In my day, before a game, we had to go around the outfield picking up the cow pats! Meanwhile, Sussex and Kent seem to have become more akin this season. An obvious concern is, will this match stretch to 3 days? Unless a miracle occurs or bad weather intervenes, Thursday is surely a non-starter?
Once our top-line batsmen are not involved their substitutes, presently at least, are just not up to it and smacks of a certain club desperation. Hudson-Prentice opening and then Cachopa following..? Every effort must be made to strengthen the batting for next season, whether this covers an O/S and several new signings. Apart from Finch one must, yet again, question the Academy and its failure to bring through worthy candidates. Fortunately, We are awash with youngster bowlers but batters? Which asks the question yet again. For Goodness sake Sussex employ a full-time batting coach for next season... please.

Just heading off from Chichester for my last day of the season, fear it's a follow on after being all out for 80, this could be over today bearing in mind our batting line up seems to include Mr Blobby , that's about the lot of our backbone . The batsmen are physiologically destroyed and I suspect Cachopa will bag a pair today . Very disorienting season overall but I guess let's take stock, regroup and go again next season. It's been a horrible year for Sussex , I don't think Davis is the man, a cheap jobs for the boys mentality within the club persists . Oh well, wish me luck ......

Yes, a reoccurring theme, I was going to travel down for the day but I've decided not to bother now. It really has been a train wreck of a season under Davis, and I'm not optimistic about the future, if these people remain in charge.
