Fitting that Archer should bring up the 200 and join Brown as the only batsmen to have looked the part in both games.
Joyce won't be available because of Irish domestic cricket and then one day international Ireland duties until at least the end of May. All of his interviews have stressed that there is no "job share". He has moved back to Ireland and might be available for a couple of matches later on if Sussex need him. We might do in June, but it is probably best for Sussex to act now and find the class player(s) we clearly need. At the time of Philander's contract I wondered if he was the right option, and I have always had doubts about Van Zyl's being able to sustain his form. I'm sure that a player with his experience will make runs, but not fluently and at the moment not at all. For the time being Finch and Rawlins ought to go back to the Seconds and hope that they can join a stronger and happier side to ease back in later on in the summer.
That's the batting, but the bowling, and the dreadful run of injuries is a major concern. Something is very wrong with a club that prides itself on its training and fitness programmes, has 11 seamers and then has to search out for the full-pitching medium pacer Barton. Why not pick Garton? Why ignore Briggs, for control at least? Is there a conflict between what Lewis wants "his" bowlers to do and what Davis wants? It must be sorted out, and its no use deferring to the "Director of Cricket" because he hasn't a clue what his job entails, as he demonstrated so painfully and so ludicrously in the YouTube interview last year. I don't know if the cricket Committe had any authority, but I think in orfer to keep Sussex afloat as a going commercial concern Rob Andrew might have to get involved very soon.

Lost for words - because there are so many that are seemingly too scathing and I don't have the time.
What have Mark Davis and Keith Greenfield done to this club? They are the worst appointments in the club's history.
People can talk about what can be done to improve the situation but I'm afraid the damage is done.

It is days like today that I have sympathy for the club media officer who writes the tweets on the Sussex Twitter. And then to have to upload the Facebook page on the two day loss and experience an onslaught of negative comments. The match only ended less than an hour ago and already 60 mostly negative comments have appeared during the last two days including calls for Mark Davis's head and a return of Grizz. en-gb.facebook.com/sussexccc/

How long does this humiliation go on before something is done at management level?
Garton and Sakande are contracted players yet they are overlooked for a medium paced trialist. A 19 year old in only his second champ game is put in at No 3. Our best bowler is flogged to injury point because we didn't have Briggs to offer some control from one end and enable him a proper rest between spells. How long before Archer, our brightest star, is also on the injury list because he's being over worked? The Kolpak signing have been a huge disappointment as has the O/S signing yet again. Luke Wright is not a 4 day player or Captain.
These and many more poor decisions are down to Mark Davis and perhaps indirectly the DoC. The buck stops here. Rob Andrew now has to show that he is the right man for the job and do some sacking otherwise he'll be bracketed with the other two and Sussex will slump to an all time low.

The new signings have been abysmal. Why were Garton and Sakande overlooked for Barton? When was the last time Wright scored any runs in the county championship? I'm not convinced he is right man to be captain of the four day team. How long before Mark Davis and Keith Greenfield are replaced? I can't see Rob Andrew standing for this rubbish.

It really is a most poisonous and debilitating disease. Rob needs to be assured that our current opinion of the cricket management isn't based just on these first two embarrassing results. Anyone who has followed Sussex in recent years will have observed the decline that started when Mark Robinson went off the boil and the club allowed him to stay on for two years too many, presumably based on his successes back in the day. No-one had the courage to replace him at the right time, and when Mark eventually left, did the club scour the country for a worthy successor? Not on your life! Up stepped Mark Davis on the Sussex internal promotion ladder - so predictable. OK, so they still had a chance to appoint a new Director of Cricket at that time: did the club scour the country for a worthy successor? Not on your life! Up stepped Keith Greenfield on the Sussex old boys' gravy train, and since then, few(if any) understand what influence he's supposed to be having on the 1st XI's performances. He certainly keeps a low profile for a Director of Cricket. There has been something very wrong about this team for a few years now, and the club has shown no real signs of acknowledging this, let alone doing something about it. I hope Rob Andrew will find the antidote to the "Sussex family" virus very soon.

Sussex have a Director of Cricket, a full time coach, a new CX, but don't have a cricket team. Chiefs/Indians?

Archer was 22 on 1st April.

Archer was 22 on 1st April. Yes, I noticed that too. Are these press releases proof read or signed off by anyone else? As you say, yet another area where Sussex are found wanting.

I have read this website, and its predecessor, for years, but have never really felt impelled to contribute before. I used to be a member of the club for decades, until I moved away from the area and haven’t watched any cricket at Hove for perhaps five years. But despite watching my cricket elsewhere, it is Sussex cricket that has always ranked first with me. I thank those of you who do write here for being such a valuable source for helping me to keep up with the Club and its activities. Sometimes in the past, I‘ve seriously considered making a small contribution here, perhaps a relevant anecdote or observation that may stimulate or entertain. I think now may be a good first time. It has seemed clear to me for a few years that SCCC was in decline. We can all have our opinions on fact and cause, but I am certainly not arguing with hindsight. Perhaps my comments should appear in a different place, not in these entrails of the match with Notts. But it is the performance in this match and the comments in this thread that have finally made me want to write. Writing from a distance, Sussex does seem to get much right: the Club’s financial management looks sounder than many; and I have always applauded the Rob Andrew appointment. But, this “Sussex family” notion needs to be measured. The historic contributions of so many families to the Club deserve to be treasured; and I’m sure a sense of “belonging” can foster team spirit; but when does in-breeding start to impair, bringing complacency and inadequately sourcing ideas from outside? I’ve just spent the last two days watching Kent versus Derby at Canterbury, certainly a more balanced match than the one at Trent Bridge. I suspect Kent are rather more of a team than Sussex, and I’ll watch Jason Gillespie’s impact with interest. Like henryr two days ago, I have wondered about Chris Adams’s managerial experiences at Surrey and his decision-making. Frankly, I don’t know if he is the right man now for Sussex. I am not close enough. But his recent record doesn’t seem compelling to me for his return to SCCC. I have watched that Keith Greenfield interview. Three times. Perhaps anyone learning media presentation skills should watch it, as a text-book case of how not to run an interview? I thought it was full of business jargon, the man looked petrified, and then and now I am not sure what he does. hhsussex rightly identifies the Jofra Archer age as a minor point, but one so indicative of what seems a slapdash approach at the Club. I will give you another example. I am interested in cricket history, and have noted the horrible mistakes on the Sussex Museum site. I remember writing two or three years ago to Jon Filby, and many were eventually corrected. But, apparently, the Club’s foremost historians were occupied on a project. So, even now, take a look at www.sussexcricketmuseum.com/exhibits/4562372929“High” Bartlett, or actually Hugh Bartlett, is an important man in the Club’s history, scorer of a notable 57-minute hundred against the 1938 Australians. “Headley” Verity was infact Hedley Verity, one of England’s greatest, classic left-arm spinners. And then the “Lilywhites”, as the site calls them, not knowing its Lillywhites?! OK, it’s a long time ago, not everyone’s cup of tea. But Lillywhite is an important, extended family in Sussex and England cricketing history. Two examples: www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/player/16296.htmlwww.espncricinfo.com/england/content/player/16580.htmlAnd this proud “family” county club is sufficiently inept to spell the Lillywhite name wrongly on our website, probably for years. Does anyone actually care? Of course in itself it’s trivial, but I’d argue it’s symptomatic of a club that has been losing its way in recent years.

soothsayer,
I echo Mod’s sentiment. Always a pleasure to read a Forum Member’s first post when they have been ‘a lurker’ for many years.
But I must make a point: Those who work for the Museum are all volunteers. While dedicated and hard working, they have little media experience and are neither trained journalists or professional writers. And that is the problem with employing a group of volunteers. Understandably, you expect them to behave like professionals; yet, their inexperience can lead to the errors you point out. Even so, the standard of their published Museum booklets is impressive. I recommend the latest tome on Jim Parks senior, researched/written by Norman Epps and produced by Phil Barnes.

Mark Davis interviewed by Adrian Harms after the defeat, reflecting on the injury toll t.co/9FoRhbVuBR and saying repeatedly, that at least we know where we are. That would be here at the moment Mark Still more talk about bringing in a new player for Thursday almost certainly a bowler. How on earth can we get into this condition with so many injuries to such a large squad? Do other counties have the same problems?
