Good news all round I think Suddenly we look pretty strong batting wise, with Prior available full time and the emergence of Cachopa. We do desperately need a seamer, and a quality one at that. I would have liked to have Tredwell here, and who knows, if wants to come and Kent release him, it still might happen. The incremental contract will help, but we probably need to channel any saved wages into attracting a decent seamer. I have a hunch that we may see a high profile player leave, which could help finance any new additions. What makes you think we can afford to pay Prior's full salary? Might he be the 'high profile player' who leaves?

There are other candidates also, although I hope that Wells and Beer are not tempted to seek pastures new.

I love that one hunch can turn into an exodus of players
And this really should be moved into a separate thread but then I would miss the fun
I would have thought that Lancs are just about relegated if they don't win (well MDX might be just about catchable if they lose to Durham) so surely they should be pushing on and setting an inviting target about 12.30 tomorrow. Might be an interesting day, two sessions to ensure safety.

The first cricket I've seen in 6 weeks and there does seem to be a lot of rust around. Lancashire's fielding this morning was perfunctory when at its most animated; at other times it was as if the prospect of chasing a ball or saving a run was worthy of nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders and a look of mild indignance that they should be expected to do such peculiar things. Zaidi was able to play his natural, hard wicket, second rate club cricketer's game to perfection, until the prospect of real attainment grew dangerously close and he gave in to the easy temptation of spanking another mediocre left-arm spinner.
He's such a likeable character, always smiling and eager, that it seems even more a pity that at this stage of his career, 10 years after he made good quantities of runs at home in Pakistan, his game is really back to front in what he gives to Sussex and what Sussex needs from him: the flamboyant, will it hit?/won't it? of his batting should really be the kind of spin that generously buys wickets, and his modestly unassuming, rather tentative deliveries would be exactly what was wanted if a batsman at number 8 was providing them in little packets of 20, 30 or 40 runs, innings after innings.
For the rest of it Magoffin gave his usual object lesson in placement and control, Jordan started to bowl a little tighter because, paradoxically he feels looser and looser the more he bowls, and Hatchett fielded really very well. At the moment it looks as if tomorrow will start with Lancashire about 100-120 in front with wickets in hand. Theoretically all the results are possible, but with all this rust clogging up the gears it doesn't seem as if either side can develop enough traction to force a result. In which case Lancs, with one game left to play will be 18 points behind Sussex and this whole desperately average, unconvincing season will snore its way to a close somewhere in the Midlands. We might even end up pulling off another win and finishing 4th or 5th if other sides stumble, but that would only emphasise how inconsistent this season has been, and how badly the cricket has suffered from the front-end loaded scheduling. Yorkshire like to be worthy winners, but noone else has shown real consistency, only purple patches.

What's going on, is it T20?

So what is the equation? I can see 251 but how many overs (50?) and would we be stupid to try (yes?). I vaguely remember a game (against Surrey I think from a few years back) when Sussex set out on a stiff last afternoon target and lost.

I think it's 59 overs. It's a shame Cricinfo doesn't tell us, though.

nice finish to the season for all of you who are thereat the ground. Watching Sussex zooming to a win in what I imagine is late afternoon sunshine with a nice beer in hand. I wish I was there. I thought they would settle for the draw, just shows how much I know. Now a win against Northants (and maybe Notts who must be deflated to have been favourites before the break to being third now) and we have third or forth and a glossed over season again.
BUT, they did very well in this game after letting Lancs off the hook on the first day. They needed the win to be 100% safe and got it. I do not think even Goatmouth can strike with 19 needed, seven wickets in hand and plenty of overs I would like to see cachopa get a hundred before the end of the season, he has a lot of 50s

WHAM! BANG! KAPPOW!
The 'Boys Own' story for the last home match of the season was flawless. Not even a Hollywood script writer could have created a more perfect scenario.
Jordan taking 4 wickets in the second innings, Zaidi coming good in the first, two fifties from Cachopa, perhaps, the most inspired county signing of the season, and of course Captain Marvel who dazzled and flashmanned his way to a 100 in the first innings and 79 in the second. How can a side so transform themselves from that wretched period during the match-fixing allegations when a relegation battle was looming to a team now 4th in Division 1 and lying above Somerset?
Astonishing!
And with the Notts and Northants games still to come, ending up 3rd and equalling last year's position is still feasible. Huge praise must go to Mark Robinson and Ed Joyce for turning around the club's fortune's so emphatically during the last few months.
A brilliant four days and a match that will last long in the memory.

Congratulations to all concerned on a pleasing victory in a fine match. And they say 4-day county cricket is dead. This is what I pay my membership for and it remains a good investment despite the crazy schedule. Let us get behind the lads and aim for two more wins. GOSBTS!

Fantastic effort by the bowlers to take twenty wickets on that pitch. Great batting by Nash, Joyce and Cachopa.

Just got back from a thoroughly good day down at Hove. Sussex fully deserving, what was in the end, a fairly straightforward win. We look to have the makings of a decent batting line up, especially when you throw Matt Prior into the mix.

I can only echo some of the comments above, particularly from howardh and from ketmandid. I too had feared that neither side were adventurous enough to seek a win, but Lancashire came out yesterday morning with renewed purpose and by so doing created a situation where the game pulsed and throbbed with excitement and possibility from over to over. It is exactly what first class cricket is supposed to be about, and with great respect to borderman in his Green Paradise, nothing is quite so engrossing and rewarding as to sit in the sun in the late summer at Hove as the score mounted and the overs ran down.
Yes, we have a fine hand of batsmen now and Cachopa has shown that he can fill the place as a dependable as well as exciting strokeplaying middle order player vacated by Goodwin. That does seem to have been the signing of the season and all credit to Nash and Wright for encouraging him while in New Zealand to come over and play club cricket, and to Robinson and everyone involved in the second eleven setup for recognising his potential and bringing him on to the staff.
Amidst all this it has to be said that we only have 1 1/2 really good bowlers, the 1/2 being Jordan when free from Tests and after what seems an inevitable first innings of his comeback match being spent on building up the steam of regular employment that he seems to depend on. Shouldn't the ECB, in its desire to pursue excellence, recognise that not all players are made to the same mould, and that while some have to be nursed for fear of injury, others are really only at their best when they play regularly, and are likely to be of limited use if bowled sparingly? Whatever else we do over the winter we have to decide what the shape of the attack is going to be next year and plan accordingly, whether its to encourage development from second tream bowlers or to go out and seek suitable players from other counties. Certainly we need a spinner, and a better one than Zaidi, able to bowl long spells and to have sufficient nous to avoid being milked. We need another spearhead beside Magoffin and some dependable support bowling. I hope that Hobden will overcome his injury problems and grow into his strength and take the former role, and perhaps the bowling of younger players like Finch and Hudson-Prentice may be the stronger suit to get them into regular play.
And with all this, let's look forward to finishing the season with some strong performances against the mighty chequebooks of Notts and the rather forlorn Northants.
