Need one of our infamous flatbeds for this one. We should be alright if we can avoid defeat in this one. Batting points will also give us a cushion from being sucked into the relegation scrap. Also, selfishly, because I am hoping to get down for the last day

Also, selfishly, because I am hoping to get down for the last day What a depressing picture you paint. Is this how you want to remember Sussex cricket throughout the winter: the last day of a tedious trawl through the formalities between a side aiming for mid-table mediocrity and a another doomed to relegation, all played out on a lifeless track with no excitement, no unpredictability, no skills beyond the mundane? That's emphatically not the kind of cricket I enjoy and I hope that Andy Mackay produces another of his juicy wickets and that enough of Lancashire's injured squad are fit so that we can have a proper match. And I'll be there for the final two days, weather and state of the game permitting, and hope to see some good cricket to finish off this unsatisfactory home fixture list.

In an ideal world maybe, but from a totally pragmatic point of view, a high scoring draw is probably all we need to safeguard our top division status. Cricket, for better or for worse, has a long history of sides preparing pitches that will give them the best chance of obtaining the result they need, most of the time at the expense of entertainment

There is something wrong with a sport if the only way you can win is by boring your customers.

It's sad, but it's the reality in professional sport these days, it's primarily about winning. In an ideal world it would be about two evenly matched sides playing each other on a pitch that offered something for both bowler and batsmen alike

I suppose because, at the moment, my sole focus is on staying in this division.

HH remind me when the groundsman produce a juicy wicket, Somerset was it? Why would we want Tredwell if that's your requirement? Does he bowl seam as well? I'd call up the Horsham groundman for advice on producing a proper cricket wicket! Can't have a turning wicket can we, they'll have Kerrigan and Parry. We'll play Tredwell and 4 seamers! Plus the opening pair of Wells and Nash?

Plus the opening pair of Wells and Nash? I haven't a clue what to respond to in your obviously spiteful but otherwise confused post. Perhaps its the fact that Andy Mackay has been gradually working on turning the soulless strips at Hove into much more interesting, cricket-playing wickets over the last two years. One example was the Northants game and at that time I reported on his lunchtime tutorial on the difficulties he'd faced and on his close working with the Horsham groundsman. As to Tredwell, turning wickets and something I've haven't quite worked out about Wells and Nash......I'm sure you know what you mean, but it didn't have any bearing on what I wrote, or indeed on my response to jonboy, who wanted a flat, lifeless strip that would help us "avoid defeat". Anyway, I hope we can agree on something I did write: that I hope that we can have some proper (i.e. allround, good) cricket and a good match to finish off what hasn't been a very satisfactory home fixture list.

HH, so sensitive, a little leg pulling was how I read it. I too think the wickets at Hove lifeless and think the groundsman says too much. Why, previous have had less time to prepare better wickets. And mostly I suspect on direction from the coach? As for Nash & Wells, I think SW includes them as bowlers but I think you know that. My own complaint is the wickets do not allow go positive cricket. The Horsham wicket had it all. Experts in this field have acknowledeged this. Why can't Hove be the same?

Tredwell back for the last three games ....according to Hollis.
Will await insiders further comment on what this implies.

My 12 now for this one would be.... Nash Wells Wright Joyce Cachopa Yardy Brown Tredwell Jordan Magoffin Hatchett Hobden
Really would like to see us try Wright at three, and stiffen the lower order batting by easing Yardy back in at six. If it was the other way around, then fair enough, it's by far our best twelve of the season

Add a quality seamer to that next season and we'd surely be back in business
