Turned up to lose today. The ineptitude of one slip is mind-blowing to me. On the plus side, I've used some lovely words this morning.
I've seen enough, we have a good nucleus (another good word) but we need a tactically aware and strong leader to make progress. Could you imagine Adams setting up like this 20 years ago?

Joe, We are challenging counties like Yorkshire and Lancs and taking games into the 4th day. We won’t win every game, we may not win many this year but we are improving and that’s all you can ask. We are building a new CC squad who are able to compete and entertain their fans for years to come.I echo your sentiments. The key as a supporter is not to raise your expectations too high. Not easy given the promising start to the season. 2021 is about creating new building blocks which under Gillespie had crumbled to dust. Already, there are positive signs under the new coaching set-up and I look forward to see how Kirtley fairs in the T20. If we can improve here too, another Finals Day may loom. Who knows? The unknown is Travis Head and how he may influence the club in all formats. "If" he can bring over his present form from Australia, we could be in for an interesting second half of the season. edit: Carson certainly has that leprechaun magic about him. Another fifer in the offing. For stats guys, how is he fairing early in the season compared to Mushy back in the 2000s? At this rate, 100 wickets for Carson in a season is a possibility, if he also plays in the ODs and T20s whether in 2021 or beyond. So far, Jack has taken 18 wickets this season in the Championship, only two less than Robinson. Currently (From Cricinfo): JJ Carson 4* (matches) 7 (innings) 161 (overs) 31 (maidens) 370 (runs) 18 (wickets) 5/85 (best bowling tally) average:20.55 stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/averages/batting_bowling_by_team.html?id=13821;team=1422;type=tournamentLancashire 153-4

Atkins bowling. 1 slip. Defensive field? With Bohannon new to the crease I would agree.

There’s a balance to be made here. If Jennings had hit a 4 to the cover boundary you’d all be saying ‘ they only need 100 odd, why isn’t there a fielder in that position?’ You can’t cover the whole ground!
Better to keep the runs down to give us more time in the game to take the wickets.

Are we surprised by the result? Sussex bossed the first innings, but badly lost the second. Lancashire's superiority won the day, but positive aplenty to take away for the south coast side. By lowering expectations, the more positives you can see. After 4 matches Sussex lie third in Group 3 with the highest number of combined batting/bowling points. I am sure we would all have taken that at the start of the season.

You never start a new day in the longer form with one slip, especially if the oppo need 130 in 90 overs with eight wickets in hand. We done a great job of holding off the inevitable for an hour today, well done Brown. That's two games we've chucked away on the spin, need an assertive leader. On the flip side, loving the youth policy right now and the live feed, it's brilliant. That, my friends, is a lesson in padding the moan. You're welcome, so long suckers.

Sussex were well beaten. However, there are positives to take from this defeat. We competed well and won several sessions against a strong Lancs side. Our younger bowlers Carson, Crocombe and Atkins are decent. Shame Garton didn't fire on all cylinders.Second innings batting was disappointing; need a little bit more toughness to occupy the crease. But again putting this in perspective our batting in the last couple of years has been poor. Keep going with batting youth please and carefully integrate the newcomers. There appears to be a good team spirit; well done Brown and the new management. We do need to make it harder for teams to beat us; that must come from captaincy decisions made when bowling and fielding. Not an easy job and maybe Brown should take a break when Head arrives. Brown is a decent keeper and bat; concentrate on that. A lot to look forward to. Roll on Northants.

It would have been great had our second innings mustered another 50 or more, but my view is that what won the game for Lancs, rather than lost it for Sussex, was their second innings batting. Jennings batted well to make the top score of the match and Davies had one of those innings that either come off or don’t. Their getting 160 between them of a 250 chase was key, so we should give credit to them and hope to learn from the experience.

A really positive start to the season for Sussex with some really positive performances and much enthusiasm to gain from a crop of young players who are showing great promise. No doubt we are in a stronger position in the group than most of us would have expected after the first four games, three of which were against arguably the strongest opposition. We seem to have developed a decent opening partnership, a wicket taking spinner, a crop of capable young fast bowlers and the second innings of this match aside the ability of our batting not to fold like a cheap suit as it has done far too often in recent seasons.
However, there is a worrying pattern developing. In the last seven red ball matches, if you exclude the rain affected draw at Old Trafford earlier this season, we have held first innings leads in EVERY other game. This is against some quality opposition such as Essex (54), Middlesex (90), Surrey (27), Glamorgan (196), Yorkshire (71) and this match Lancashire (98), yet we have only gone on to win just ONE of these games losing the other FIVE.
A big question for the Sussex coaches. Why - Do opposition teams underestimate us or do we lack the application and concentration over the four days? More importantly - How to solve this?
Certainly grounds for optimism and hopefully with experience and the introduction of Head, Salt & Jordan we may yet see a few more Championship points, which we certainly appear to deserve on first innings efforts.
