There is a general consensus that Sussex have emerged from the first three games with much credit. The record shows one win, one draw and one defeat, but an unexpected win over Yorkshire last week turned out to be just out of our grasp. The four opening fixtures with two against Lancashire and one against Yorkshire looked daunting when they were announced. As we arrive at the fourth game, there can be some optimism that we will, at least, compete strongly against a decent team in the shape of Lancashire.
Lancashire come to Hove as leaders of Group 3, having recorded comfortable wins over Kent and Northamptonshire. Sussex held Lancashire to a draw in the opening game of the season, but will undoubtedly find the visitors tough opponents. Four Lancashire batsmen have already recorded centuries - Dane Vilas (including 189 against Sussex), Daniel Lamb, Luke Wood and Steven Croft. Matthew Parkinson spun Lancashire to victory against Kent last week, taking seven second innings wickets. Tom Bailey has also picked 12 wickets already this season.
The ran-affected game at Old Trafford at the beginning of April frittered out as a draw as Sussex got within 3 runs of knocking off the first innings deficit with 8 wickets in hand. With six Sussex batsmen averaging over 30 (Can you name the six? Answers at the bottom), led by Tom Haines averaging 66 with just under 400 runs under his belt, Sussex will be coming to the game with some confidence.
A good result in this game will place Sussex in a good position for the easier-looking May programme, which has two games against Northamptonshire and one against Kent. Also, Travis Head should be available for these games. Can Sussex challenge the league-leaders? We are just going to have to wait and see, I guess.
Other games in our group this week:
Glamorgan v Kent at Cardiff
Yorkshire v Northamptonshire at Leeds
The batsmen with an average of over 30 are: Haines (66.16), Thomason (56.00), Meaker (36.00), Garton (35.50), Robinson (33.00), Clark (31.50).
