Agreed, there are various players missing for this game and Sussex are up against a top side like Notts, but the bottom-line being: Where is the mental strength, the fighting spirit required from our cricketers to be competitive? Little has changed since last season. We are now at parity (159 runs) with just two one wicket left.
A miracle is needed to pull off a draw. Do you see any progress made since last season apart from promising performances of a few batsmen.
If the club are to keep using "the youngsters" as a carrot for supporters to keep backing this extreme club policy, regular overall improvements must be seen and the major one is: at least be competitive against other sides. If you lose, then go down fighting.
As if to emphasis this point, the Match Centre livestream died a death mid-afternoon. So no change there either.

Pathetic. The sooner Pujara, Rizwan, Garton, Hudson-Prentice, Robinson and Carson replace Alsop, Atkins, Crocombe, Ibrahim, Lenham and Rawlins the better. Describing a team with an average age of 21 5 as pathetic really isn't helpful. We have a long list of injuries and players unavailable and not having Ibrahims bowling and batting really hindered us The average age maybe 21 but they really need to toughen up quickly. Playing for Sussex is a privilege not a god given right. How desperate are they to succeed for Sussex? I don't see any improvement in some of the youngsters. Unless they want to be flipping burgers in McDonalds on £9.50 per hour the youngsters need to practice much harder and for longer and spend less time on Facebook and Instagram and socialising. Cricket is a career which can be cut short unless you are prepared to put the hard yards in. It's a full time job! James and Patterson-White are only 23 and Evison 20 and they are streets ahead of our youngsters. If any of three became available on loan I would immediately sign them.

Battling for 4 days against a top side shows mental strength. Whilst I expected us to lose I did expect us to show more resistance. I don't think the management have any choice now but to sign more players on loan as unfortunately at least half of this team don't look ready for first team cricket. We lost this game yesterday when we let them go from 325-7 to 534-9. They should have been bowled out for less than 400. This was a Notts team missing Broad, Pattinson and Patterson so there is no excuse for the batsmen failing. Perhaps I am being harsh but the management's goal of promotion looks a long way off. Professional sports is tough and the only the mentally strong will make it. Bookies have us as second outsiders and at the most I think that is more likely. www.theargus.co.uk/sport/20050327.ian-salisbury-aims-take-sussex-back-top/Tom Haines has shown the level of hard work, practice and commitment you need to put in to succeed as a professional cricketer. Two years ago his career was at a crossroads and now look at him. He should be an example for Atkins, Crocombe, Clarke, Carter etc to follow. I welcome the arrival of Pujara as I think he is exactly the sort of experienced batsmen we need right now. Hopefully he can prove a role model for Orr, Haines, Carter, Clark etc. to follow and learn from.

You have to give them time. By the way Haines was out to a poor shot in the 2nd innings.

If they are not ready for first team cricket, and the management need to access that for themselves, then we may need to sign some players on loan until they are ready. I accept Notts are the best team in this division. However, to lose after scoring 375 in the first innings is a big disappointment. Letting them get a lead of 159 yesterday is where we lost this game. Any news on Pujara, Rizwan, Garton, Hudson-Prentice, Carson and Robinson returning?

Should have Pujara and Rizwan in for next week but no Ollie and Ibrahim who is out for a few weeks with shoulder ligament damage. Garton long covid so he must be a doubt. Hudson Prentice back stress fracture so probably won't see him for a while and Carson still recovering from back op. He was there today practicing which was good to see. Haynes Orr DelBoy and Clark batted well but not enough consistency which is the downside of having too many youngsters. Good first 2 days but we let them off the hook. Could have been worse as Broad Ball and Pattinson didn't play. Fletcher injured after bowling only 1 over 2nd innings. Let's hope for better next week 😁👍

Thank you for the update. Pujara and Rizwan for Ibrahim and Lenham? My team for Derbyshire: Orr, Haines (c), Pujara, Rizwan, Clark, Alsop, Carter wk, Rawlins, Finn, Crocombe, Atkins Robinson is a big miss. Perhaps Notts could loan us Lyndon James, Liam Patterson-White or Joey Evison.

Haines took 4 years to reach a high level, you are prepared to grant him time but none of the others, you want loan signings but haven't criticised alsop. You refuse to see that Pujara, Rizwan, Olli Rob and FHP would make us significantly stronger. You sir just want to be right, no posts of praise just critique. I believe you want us to lose so you can have a rant. Go and support someone else because calling Kids pathetic is just plain wrong

Alsop has played one game. Nine of the players are over 18 and therefore not kids. Patterson-White and James are 23 and Evison is 20. Clark, Orr and Haines managed scores of 50+ in this match. I expect our youngsters to perform to the same level as them. The youngsters need to improve or the CC season will be over before Carson, FHP, Olli Rob and Garton return (we don't know how long it will be before they return). These youngsters don't know how lucky they are to be playing first team cricket for Sussex because they wouldn't even have got a look in under some previous Sussex coaches. They need to repay the faith Kirtley and Salisbury have put in them by performing on the pitch. These are millions of cricket supporters who would love to be in their shoes.

I thought Sussex played really well on the first day and most of the second day, but it ended up being a case of "deja vu all over again", as Yogi Berra famously said. I am heartily fed up with reading in Sussex match reports on the website references to "the young Sussex side" and their plucky efforts against stronger teams. Of course they're stronger teams because they include experienced players. We have "a young Sussex side" as a result of choices made by the county's management/coaching staff - no one held a gun to their heads and said "You can only field players in their teens and early twenties". Of course, I realise that our overseas players weren't here in time for the first game, and I realise that Robinson, Garton and F H-P would have ordinarily been in the line-up, but we are where we are because of an ill-conceived focus on youth at the expense of experience. Attempts to paint this as some kind of David v Goliath story don't cut it for me.
