I would call that a miracle result for Sussex. A win for Worcestershire looked a cert as the afternoon unwound. Well done to the bowlers though, for changing the match course and creating the Worcester nerves at the end, for we certainly didn't deserve to lose the game. A draw was a fair result, imho. Meanwhile, the Sussex batting remains strong, even after the loss of Pujara, and praise must be heaped on Grant Flower for his stirling efforts. Sadly though, the bowling is still not good enough to get us promotion, in my view, even after piling on the O/S option. I agree with your post but it might surprise you to know that Sussex have the highest bowling points in both divisions (equal with Surrey) on 21.

A good point, but the problem is not the first innings, but the second. To state the obvious, a team must take 20 wickets to win a match. For whatever reason, we cannot achieve this and why the six draws.

Very good point. Well I make it that we fought back in all 4 innings of the match. Not often that happens. Well done everyone on securing a draw and almost snatching an unlikely victory.

Thanks for the mention a brilliant effort to chase down 501!! You guys have improved a lot this season showing guts and skill in every CC game. Just need to turn those draws into wins. I think PF needs to bring at least one bowler in on loan. We have some good bowlers who cannot get in our team! I don’t think we’d gain by giving another team’s reserve bowlers game time at the expense of developing our own players. Now if it was a ‘try before you buy’ deal (like with Alsop) that could be a different matter! Congrats to Surrey who are probably close to sealing another title already. For the sake of an exciting competition, I do hope someone can rise to challenge you next year.

I completely agree with you both, our bowling unit does need strengthening. It is certainly not of the required standard to maintain Division One status if we were to get promoted. However, I feel we should not forget when assessing the results this season and our inability to take twenty wickets, the impact the weather had during our first five matches. Whilst it undoubtedly saved us from defeat against Yorkshire, the significant time lost in the Gloucestershire, Worcestershire (away) and Leicestershire matches most definitely impacted on our ability to secure victory. We lost whole days or the equivalent in all four fixtures.

Yeah but the thing is, they’re not developing, and a lot of the experienced bowlers have an asterisk next to them, which is why we could do with a loan bowler.
