And Joyce, too. Three down with 35 mins still to go to lunch, and there is still plenty of time for my fear of four or five down in the first session.
But Joyce and Machan were surely right to keep the scorebaord moving like that. Doesn't sound like a wicket where crease occupation and patience will necessarily bring much reward.

At the start of play I'd have settled for 117-4 at lunch.
It might easily have been 60-6!
If the wicket continues to assist seam and swing as it has done this morning - and presumably it will - the 88 run partnership between Joyce and Machan may well turn out to have been a match-winning one.

Why, its almost as if they had prepared it specially!

Tough on Wells I think, unless he's injured. Four innings is a bit early to be dropping a regular, especially as Finch comes in with no form for the seconds. I think Wells has a decent record at Durham too, although I ain't certain. Good luck to Finchy though, tricky place to get a start it seems.

Wells is our number 1 spin bowler at the moment too. It won't hurt him to sit out for a bit though, he's not scored many for a while really.

200 will be a very competitive score on this wicket. But at 143-6, it seems a long way away.
Magoffin and Shahzad should be close to unplayable if they put it in the right places and there's a better opportunity for young Robinson to impress with the ball than poor Finch had, who was an hiding-to-nothing with the bat in such conditions.

Conditions must be about the same everywhere today, we're the only side getting steam-rolled throughout the two divs. See how they go, that's the rule, but we should surely be doing better than this. Quite a few starts too but 169-8 is awful frankly.

203 for 9 - Robinson has raced to 41. That's one more batting point than I expected an hour or so ago. Second highest stand too.

Fair play to Robinson who has grabbed his chance with both hands. Machan and Joyce also batted very well. I was checking his record to see if he was the guy who scored a hundred against our Under 17s four years ago. His Under 17 record for Kent was very impressive: Batting: 598 runs @ 54 HS 106* 3 100s 2 50s (100s against Notts, Essex and Sussex). Bowling: 16 wickets @ 17 BB 7-33 against Sussex in the same game as the hundred. www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/334/334981.htmlOnly Hudson-Prentice, Robinson and Weller made it to professional level from either team.

I'm looking forward to him making his debut in the Kent first XI afte tthe uni term has ended, because it will surely complete Rob Key's transformation into Mr Pickwick! Meanwhile I'm thrilled for Ollie Robinson on his f/c debut. Another great find/rehab exercise by Sussex! I hope that the last wkt partnership dosn't mean the seamer friendly conditions have suddenly eased , though, because even Hobden seems to be playing with some freedom at the moment.

When do you think we will declare? When we get to 400 i.e. we won't be declaring!

When do you think we will declare? When Hobden gets his maiden 100, of course! Well done both on a great partnership.

Cachopa's dismissal: excellent picture that tells a story about the wicket and conditions, at least earlier today

As Robinson and Hobden take 11 off an over from Collingwood, it strikes me that the bowler must be about as old as the two batsmen's years added together!
Absolute fairytale stuff from Robinson who has scored at better than a run a ball.
