Hmm, yes I was thinking that, well we'd better have someone decent lined up to replace him

Mark Davis in the Argus on Oct 4: “We’re not 100 per cent sure what Ed is doing yet. We have asked him to give us an answer by the start of next month as it is quite tricky to plan ahead until we know whether he is going to play or not. We’d love him to stay because he is a quality player but we don’t want to miss out on somebody else while we are waiting for his decision.”
Well, he ignored Davis's request ... and if he still hasn't made up his mind all these weeks later, are we to assume he's following Messrs Toumasi and May through the exit door?
If so, I do hope Sussex has not been forced to "miss out on somebody else while we are waiting for his decision," as Davis feared would happen if an answer was not forthcoming by the beginning of November ...

It's not actually clear whether he has yet been offered a contract though

So Ed stays, for another year at least. Absolutely delighted with that. He has been awarded a central contract by Ireland, but will be available to play some championship games for Sussex. Brilliant, a win win situation for both, Sussex, and Ed, and probably Ireland too, as Ed will continue playing at a good level. One footnote though, if Ed's appearances are to be sporadic, then we perhaps need to find a new opening partner for Chris Nash. Hopefully the new incoming batsman will be an opener, because it's important to have a settled opening pair

Hopefully the new incoming batsman will be an opener, because it's important to have a settled opening pair Ireland currently have fixtures throughout May and in Mid-September, and so Joyce could be available for most of the championship games, if fit and not required to rest or train by Ireland, and if they do not contract for any more games. I can see that it looks like an attractive solution for Sussex, to avoid the considerable overheads of a contract and simply pay on a match basis and to have the continuity of experience. I wonder how it will work in practice and in the dressing-room. Will younger players, anxious to break through and establish themselves , grow to resent the re-appearances of the cuckoo? I have nothing against Joyce and he has given great service to Sussex and a lot of pleasure to cricket watchers, myself included. I do think it is best to make a clean break and just accept that you have to move on and explore new options, and that teams work better when they grow together. In modern cricketing parlance: Going forward we shouldn't look back.

Next winter we will have the shining light that is Tom Haines, Ed's eventual successor , graduating from the academy

Reading (or mis-reading?) between the lines of the SCCC press release, I took it that Ed would be called up as 'cover' only as and when required. I didn't assume that if he was free and fit, then he'd be picked automatically. Anyway, however you read it, Sussex can apparently call the tune.

'Cover' means he could be parachuted in as an emergency if Sussex are down to four experienced fit batsmen... Can't see him playing more games than Dexter did in 1968 (two). And if Wright, Nash, Wells, Machan, Finch and Van Zyl all stay fit and in form, we won't see him at all. Glad it has been resolved. But it really should have been sorted out two or three months ago.

Understandably, Ed wants to have his cake in Dublin, whilst eating it in Sussex.

Understandably, Ed wants to have his cake in Dublin, whilst eating it in Sussex. Speaking of cake, somebody has really been enjoying the privileges of Hove: jon filby and Zac Toumazi liked Elizabeth Ammon @legsidelizzy 4h4 hours ago A quasi job share between Ireland and Sussex is really innovative. Good for Sussex and good for Ed Joyce 1 reply 1 retweet 6 likes
