Just confirming what Ed had told us months ago, although Sussex seemed to find it difficult to accept! Good luck, Ed. You were the backbone of our batting for several years - I hope you continue to flourish. Indeed, if Sussex truly believed Ed will have been playing games for Sussex, then they must have budgeted for him doing so. That money can now go into the pot to help fund a new opener to replace Ed. It's a shame that Ed's Sussex time has fizzled out this way, and we couldn't give him the send off he deserved.

I believe the deal was a pay-per-play one so they've neither saved nor lost from the budget. Everyone knows now that you want an opener jonboy, no need to keep saying it, you are sounding like a broken record. Apart from Ross Taylor coming back for our Blast campaign I'd be very surprised if we have plans for any more additions to the squad. Have faith in Harry Finch, he'll come good.

I think this is a non sequiter. The Joyce deal meant that the expenditure could ultimately vary from 0 up to a substantial figure. A reasonable estimate of the likely cost should have been included in the budget. The only excuse for not doing this would be if any cost would have been counteracted by a corresponding reduction to another player's pay-per-play deal. There should be a budget saving as a result of Ed's 'retirement', although my guess is that it wouldn't be substantial, because the club wouldn't have expect him to be available very often, if at all.

As he's the only one stepping up for the job then yes. I think van Zyl would be a better choice although he has said that he doesn't want to do it!

Hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down. Not so, I'm with JB and if Sussex have any sense they will be too. The time, when Philander leaves. The route, overseas. We have Jordan back and we have a host of quality young seamers all performing well for the seconds - one of them can get into the Lions team but not ours. Play them. Finch is a middle order bat. This will be a great opportunity to bring in a much needed quality opener - my pick is Renshaw for the CC.
We'll be stupid not to, won't we JB?

Mate, Im making you right there It's a specialist position, and an important one. Fair play to Finch for putting his hand up, but long term, it doesn't do him any favours, he's a middle order batsman. As far as I can see, we have two specialist opening bats on the staff, Nash, and the unproven Salt. That's not enough, another is required and the overseas route is the best way to fill the position

Not much I enjoyed more than Ed Joyce in full form.
I remember against Notts in the final session of a day. Stuart Broad at the end of his run up setting his field and shouting so the whole ground can hear... "I'm going to bowl it as his head, I'm going to bowl it at his head". He instead bowled a full ball which Ed just pushed through the covers effortlessly for four and walked off to square leg as normal, with large cheers from the Hove faithful. Class.
I'd also like an overseas batsman preferably top three.

Joe may want to look away now, or at least put me on ignore, but it's time to stop the experiment of using Finch to open the innings. Bring in a proper opener FFS

Bring in a proper opener FFS jb, it's not the asking I'm fed up with, it's the knowledge that we won't get one, or at least not one that would make a difference. Who would come to a below average 2nd div club? Certainly not the top flight overseas opener you're after that's for sure!
