Joe may want to look away now, or at least put me on ignore, but it's time to stop the experiment of using Finch to open the innings. Bring in a proper opener FFS jb, it's not the asking I'm fed up with, it's the knowledge that we won't get one, or at least not one that would make a difference. Who would come to a below average 2nd div club? Certainly not the top flight overseas opener you're after that's for sure! There's truth in that, but it's only going to get worse. Soon, not only will we be unable to attract decent players, but we will lose the few shining lights we have

I can't see any truth in that. We have Philander, last year we had Taylor, overseas players want county experience and they get well paid. Most may rather play at Lords than Hove but most can't afford to be fussy and will play where they get the chance to.
The decision to bring in Philander in the first place was a poor one because he's a bowler and it was obvious to everyone we needed a batsman - an opening batsman. This decision looks even poorer and more obvious now.
Wells doesn't want to open CP, he's had good success at three and you know what batsman are like. We have a barrage of bowlers doing very little. We have Mags, Shahzad, Garton and Whittingham on the bench for Christ's sake.
It's obvious what needs to happen but it can't happen yet. It needs to happen though.

You've just contradicted your own reasoning. Yes, we've got Philander and last year we had Taylor but they've both been hugely disappointing. Taylor did nothing in the CC last year and Philander appears to be another one who is very hit and miss. The only person to ultimately blame for that is the person who signed them. There's something very wrong at management level at Sussex.

I ain't contradicted nothing. They're both big name internationals with good records. You can't make them do well, they just do or don't and if they're an international more often than not they will. Taylor was pants but that's harsh on Philander - seven wickets in his last two innings ain't it? This is only his third game for us.
There's definitely something wrong at management level - it's called Mark Davis and Keith Greenfield. You don't need to convince me of anything there. But that is a much more difficult and unlikely thing to change than simply signing the right overseas player (batter).
Coaches don't just get sacked mid season in cricket, Andrew or whoever will have to review that in the winter. The best chance we have of turning things around is the overseas route and that is plain and simple. What he produces after we've signed him is in the lap of the Gods - or whoever's running the world these days.

I'm not sure this is the right time for a "it's just not cricket" moment Another season of stagnation, like last, could do irreparable damage to the clubs fan base Agree though, that the best way we can immediately effect performances, is to bring in an overseas batsman, preferably an opener, and better still if it's someone with leadership qualities

Jeet Ravel, the New Zealand test opener, is currently in the county playing for Cuckfield in the Sussex County League. Could he be an option when Phillander's contract expires?

I did suggest him as, perhaps, a budget option Would have thought, were the club thinking along those lines, then they would have given him a few games for the seconds

I've seen quite a bit of Jeet Ravel on TV and I like what I see! Very impressive start to his Test career, can grind it out if necessary in the old-fashioned opener mould. And a good slip fielder too!

Did the club genuinely believe that Joyce would be available for 7 or 8 matches, or was it a convenient smokescreen to cover the fact that they again didn't bring in a much needed opener. I guess we'll never know, but now that Joyce has officially confirmed he isn't available, we most definitely do have a vacancy. There isn't much we can do now in terms of bringing in a domestic opener, but we will have option in June to bring in an overseas opening bat. Any signing could then potentially act as our second overseas for the T20, unless the club has other plans for that competition. Jeet Raval seems to be a good fit, he appears available, and is already playing locally Wouldn't imagine he'd cost too much either, certainly he'd be cheaper than Philander, so with the savings made on him and Joyce, we could offer young Burgess a contract. There, that wasn't difficult was it, I've instantly rebalanced the squad, with a proper opening partner for Nash, and signed up a promising keeper as well Nothing to this management game

Could you also please sort out the fielding problems, cut down on the wasteful number of extras, bring in some decent caterers and find a proper, revenue-earning tenant for the former Pasticci premises please? Oh, and tea with two sugars. Thank you!

Maybe posting in wrong place but just wanted to say what a diabolical decision to give Joyce a benefit. Appreciate I am against, in this day and age benefits full stop but how on earth Joyce who chose to leave
