Two half-centuries in 15 innings and our former 'Mr Reliable' sitting in a lowly seventh place in the Sussex batting averages. Starting to resemble Goodwin's final season?

Well, Father Time catches up will all men. What's Joyce, 36? Getting that way. I was calling for Goodwin to retire (I have that much influence you see) when he was 36 I think. He had a shocking season and Gatting was looking promising but couldn't get in proper. Goodwin carried on, had a good season, followed by a bad one and then had to leave. Not sure what my point is - oh yeah, Father Time.

That's disappointing - when I saw the Ed Joyce thread had come alive I was hoping for news of his standing down as captain. Oh well, hopefully soon. I do rate him highly as a player, having said all that and a few more things lately. Unburden him.

A good knock from a class player against, well Christ knows.
I wonder if we expect Joyce to play again in div one. If we do, it means another contract. And if we do, I wonder what the point is, given his age. There's never been a better time to offer Joyce to other counties, for me. And Mags to be honest. There's never been a better time to make big forward-thinking changes. They're not gonna offer much in div one and are not needed in div two - not a tricky puzzle to conquer.

I wouldn't want to get too complacent about getting out of Div 2, it's possible there may only be one team promoted if the CC changes to just 8 in the top flight, and God forbid other teams might actually play better than us.

I don't understand the complacency either, and not just by people on here. There's talk that Briggs, may well be the extent of our rebuilding, which in my opinion, would be a huge mistake. The squad is down by four, and similar fitness and availability issues hang over our seam bowling attack

I think this is on the wrong thread, but briefly - I don't think the mood on this MB is complacent - far from it. I wouldn't put my money on promotion next year - far too glib an assumption, especially as the playing budget sounds as if if it's going to be cut.

I'm not complacent as I know there is a lot of work to be done on the squad to compete in div1 but I'm convinced we will win div2. It really is an awful standard.

He's playing for Ireland tonight, I didn't know that but I do now, hence the post. Ireland have a half decent side once England have discarded of most of them. They should have Morgan soon, they really should, because the England one-day captain is s**t, and has been for a long time.

This guy Joyce seems in good form. Why not give him a go?

Was surprised to be told by a couple of people at Hove during the Glos match that Joyce is expected to retire at the end of this season and return to Ireland. This article by Tim Wigmore on cricinfo confirms that he is indeed "weighing up returning to Ireland for good after the current county season." He's going to be a hard act to replace. Neither Salt nor Christian Davis seem quite ready for the step-up and Machan and Cachopa haven't made the strides forward one would have hoped for this season. That leaves Finch as the great white hope. If Joyce retires, I think Sussex needs to find a Klinger/Madsen/Cosgrove type figure from overseas... www.espncricinfo.com/ireland/content/story/1049149.html
