The highlight of day 1 was missed by 90% of the Arundel crowd who left after the umpires declared bad light stop play, believing that was it for the day.
Instead, those who remained were then treated to a glorious fight back from the Sussex tailenders. From 248-9 to 300-9 with the final over of the day bringing up the 300, 3 batting points, Lewis's 50 and his 50 partnership with Hatchett. A wonderful end to a topsy-turvy batting display where Sussex were lucky to get out of jail after frugal batting from the middle order.
The attendance of 2,500 was similar to the highest Championship crowd at Hove on day 1 of the Notts game when the Club's 175th Anniversary was celebrated.
Meanwhile...
After growing concerns that 'Sussex Festival Cricket' is under threat the attendance at Arundel during the 'T20 Blast' match between Sussex and Somerset numbered in excess of 5,000 and paid testament to the phrase 'rumours of my demise are greatly exaggerated'.
Not only was this one of the biggest crowds seen at Arundel, swollen by a strong contingent of Somerset supporters, but exceeds the largest crowd at Hove this season (T20 against Sri Lanka) clearly showing the continued popularity of outfield festival cricket. Kudos to all those organisers involved.
When Somerset scored 163 there was hope this was an obtainable score. After a promising start the Sussex batsmen floundered from around the 11th over due to tight Somerset bowling. In the end, Sussex fell 34 runs short and to their 5th T20 loss on the trot. A journalist at the ground pointed out afterwards an astonishing fact. This was Sussex's 13th T20 loss from their last 15 games.
Meanwhile, the great success of Sunday afternoon's attendance questions the ECBs decision this season to keep the day locked for mainly first day championship matches. Sunday afternoon OD cricket has always been a popular event and perhaps next year the ECB may see fit to use them for the 50 over competition, if the Championship trial is deemed a disappointment.

The young journalist, Tim Wigmore, who wrote this review for 'Cricinfo' today, has broken his left leg in two places whilst playing football 4 weeks ago and was hobbling around on crutches in great pain, living off a diet of painkillers and codeine. He had taken a taxi from London to the ground this morning as going on a train would have been too painful for him. At least, he is staying overnight in an Arundel hotel. One's amazed he was in any state of mind to write this piece. As he said, "I am feeling depressed and irritable due to the pills, so please stay away from me!" www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2014/content/story/753025.html

And I say that despite the fact that having vox-poped me and hhsussex during the Sussex v Warwicks match at Hove last season, he then attributed our views in his cricinfo report to a couple of 'ancient county diehards', or something similar. hh - being a numquam ignoscam nec obliviscar kind of guy - may remember the exact phrase better than me. I remember 'someone' requiring a certain level of erudition on the old message board, but this is unfair! I will never forgive or forget this, BM.

He is a nice lad, and therein lies my remembrance of the age-perception involved in the encounter. Rather than bm's recollection of us as a kind of Hove version of Waldorf and Stadler, Tim merely referred to us as a couple of supporters. However, it was me who a few minutes before had remarked to bm, noticing Tim doing another interview a row or two in front of us, how pleasant it was to see this youth accompanying his venerable uncle or even grandad at the cricket, chatting with him before returning to tap into his Facebook page on his ipad when his attention waned. It's the journalists who are getting younger, I find.

Keeping it tight, having a quality spinner tying up one end must make it much easier for the seamers to rotate. All we need now is a few wickets to reflect the control that Mags and Tredders are apparently showing.
Looks like something has changed as Tredders figures have been spoilt 9 overs for 14 has become 11 for 28 but Mags 14 overs 1 for 8 with 9 maidens. Supreme.

perhaps Tredders should have short sharp spells?

Don't get carried away boys. It's about getting wickets. 50 overs, 1 wicket. Need someone apart from Magoffin to get a wicket. All very well having Tredwell to tie up an end. Rather he went for 5 an over and got 2-3 wickets. But that's me.
Just looked to find the age of Leaning, that's not how you do it Yorkshire, he's 20! Play him in the 2nd team. Most unfair!

Another glorious Arundel day with attendance larger than yesterday's 2,500. In fact, the atmosphere was so rich with the broad Yorkshire that the encircling herring gulls must have believed they were flying above Scarborough. The highlight was Magoffin and Tredwell bowling in tandem after lunch. The control they brought touched on memories of Mushy and Kirtley. These new Sussex superheroes, 'Mags and Tredders', reminded one of 'Batman and Robin', as the immediate and positive effect Tredwell has had on the Sussex team is "Bam, Kappow, Biff and Wham!" Not only has Tredwell discovered a spring in his step not seen for many years but re-energised a recently malaised-looking Sussex side. Magoffin's figures of 23 overs, 13 maidens, 22 runs, 2 wickets were Gotham mind-blowing, whilst Tredwell's 29 overs, 9 maidens, 72 runs, 1 wicket played a Robinesque support. Elsewhere, Jack Russell had a stall selling his latest book and prints of his cricket paintings (lookout for an interview with Jack on the 'Wicked Cricket Blog'); Sussex under the stewardship of Tony Cottey were hosting a lunch for the PCA where famous players from the past attended including Les Lenham, John Barclay, Pat Pocock and Bob Taylor; and hamstrung Ryan Sidebottom and Yorkshire opening bat Alex Lees walked amidst the crowd chatting to their travelling supporters - a lovely touch. All in all a perfect day where the end of day score was secondary. PS: The official attendance figure for the Sunday 'T20 Blast' against Somerset was 5,500 - over 500 more than the largest Hove attendance of this season against Sri Lanka. Can't wait to get down there tomorrow despite a dodgy ankle injury (roll on a taxi!). There is something I always loved about people bowling dry in county cricket. I hope the thought of getting past us and putting pressure on leads yorks to have a go.
