Lewis has now bowled at least 70 overs in CC without a wicket. Now that I call dry bowling. Lewis started so well with ten wkts in the first two games but he has only taken two wkts in two months since then. Yesterday at Arundel he looked like what I suupose he is - a creaking trundler who is two months shy of his 39th birthday. That's fine because I don't think most of us expected him to play in the championship at all, so his early season wkts were a happy bonus. But it exposes the simple truth that without Jordan, the seam attack starts and ends with Magoffin, assisted by the Rt Hon Anyon buying a few wkts in support (I recall the vice-chairman told us recently that the Sussex coaching staff expect him to leak 4.5 plus runs per over). For the rest, I'd have thought a seam line-up of Lewis, Hatchett, Hobden and Piolet would struggle to bowl sides out even in div two. But what do I know? Robinson took 584 more f/c wkts than I ever did so if he's happy with the resources he's assembled, he is more than entitled to dismiss out of hand any reservations I may have that Sussex's seam bowling lacks depth.

At least we're not going down without a fight. And if we can't quite muster a fight, we could always try a bit of plea bargaining, Lou Vincent style!

Arundel Day 3 - a Personal PerspectiveOn the day that former Sussex seamer, Naved Arif, was given a life ban from cricket by the ECB, Board CEO David Collier was in deep conversation mid morning with club director David Bowden. No doubt the talk was on more cheerful subjects like the 'Sussex Cricket in the Community Trust' which is spearheaded by Bowden - a project that the ECB are mightily impressed with, where they are encouraging other counties to follow suit and use Sussex as their role model. Collier spent much of the day watching the cricket, chatting to the Sussex hierarchy and staff, and being active on his mobile. No doubt a furtive Giles Clarke asking whether Lalit Modi was in attendance and was he talking to any 'Cricketer Magazine' staff. Collier refused to take interviews on such an inauspicious day. It was the turn of Sussex sponsor 'Mayo Wynne Baxter' to wine and dine their staff and clients in the large marquee on the hill. Festival Cricket is ideal for such entertainment. Whilst another 4 groups of children representing different local schools attended free of charge and were offered cricket coaching by Sussex staff during the lunch and tea breaks... a brilliant Club initiative. On the field the game heads towards an attritional draw bar a second innings Sussex batting collapse. Wells and Nash survived a squeaky bum final 10 overs where the tedious shrieks of the Yorkshire fielders after almost every ball even drowned out the squawks of the herring gulls. One of today's highlights was a Tredders 'Flintoffesque' caught and bowled. The batsman Jack Leaning looked utterly distraught being just one run away from his maiden century. Meanwhile, Tredwell bowled 59 overs in the first innings. Perhaps, as many in 2 days than the last 2 seasons at Kent? I am sure borderman will put me straight. Certainly, Sussex are getting their on-loan money's worth. And perhaps, a cunning plan by the club to make him so knackered for Friday's T20 at Canterbury that he won't be able to bowl for Kent. Yet more injury woes for Sussex as Ed Joyce watched from the dressing room as he nurses a suspect hamstring. He may bat at No.7 tomorrow if required. Callum Jackson subbed. Whilst Yardy may be out now for most of the remaining season. A terrible time to get injured given 2014 is his benefit year. The atmosphere was somewhat subdued - perhaps a reflection of the cricket on the pitch - but still well over 2,000 attended - a larger crowd than expected at Hove. This summer's 'Arundel Cricket Festival' is heading towards a 5 day high of up to 16,000 attendees. Perhaps, an all-time record? Hearty congratulations to Sussex CCC and Arundel CC for organising such a successful festival event. As a famous American writer might say: "Rumours of my demise are greatly exaggerated."

What a borefest. Dunno what Yorks are up to apart from showing us that 300 was an under par score. Truly diabolical. The sort of track that should never be used for cricket, and certainly not with our attack. Playing for the draw, great.

And people wonder why it's difficult/impossible to convert the uninitiated to county cricket. Entertainment industry? Pah!

These are Wickets demanded by coaches. I have said before we need better cricket wickets for all skills. Not just to suit seamers! This makes for dull, uninteresting batting, bowling, selection, everything.
Time for the ECB to step in and employ all head groundsmen. No home bias then.
I agree, about time cricket recognised they are entertainers! Entertain us then!

Sussex are facing the one major problem with festival cricket and playing on out-grounds. The club has no control over the pitch conditions, as Mark Robinson told Members several times at the recent Public Forum.

Is anyone awake at Arundel?
What sort of crowd is there today?

Watching cricket is not all about entertainment, it is a pace of life. If I wanted 24/7 entertainment I would chose another sport or become a fan of reality TV. This game was a must not lose game for Sussex so boring is good for me.
I agree about Yorkshire, why did they plod along when they have title aspirations and playing a team low on confidence and not a title contender? The commentators were saying that Yorks showed intent and then a maiden would be bowled. Perhaps they thought that Sussex would role over in the second innings? or maybe Bairstow had seen Butler had scored a 100 for Lancs? No idea.
Hoping that this is going to give some of our batsmen a bit more confidence 174/1, Wells 52 and RHB 61. Maybe I should not have said anything, RHB out for 62.
Sorry - I did not mean to post this with Umpire1 - sorry

I wouldn't like to have the job of marketing that concept. I'm not really sure I know what it means. I watch a lot of cricket and have never realised it was the pace of life that attracted me.

Luke Wells needs to slow down. He was all set to write himself into the record books with one of the slowest innings in history. But Yorks have brought on the buffet bowling and he's gone and ruined his chance of an entry in the Wisden records section by helpling himself to a few easy runs. Silly boy!

Pooqueeta! Absolute pooqueeta. Both teams about as guilty as each other for that yawn-fest. Pace of life? Was anybody still alive by the end. A draw, yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! I'm probably being a bit harsh on Sussex, given our condition, but Yorks? What were they up to? Maybe they had a captaincy lesson from Alister Cook before the game.

At 188-7 on day 1, Robinson would have taken your hand off for a draw and 9 points. So, a 'borefest' on the pitch, yes, but off the pitch it was a great success. Positives to Take Away: No 2nd innings batting collapse. : Nash scored his first 50 of the season (?) : RHB scored over 100 runs in the two innings. : Wells over 150 runs. : Tredwell has quickly and easily melded with the side. : Festival Cricket at Arundel is here to stay. NegativesThe pitch which Mary Berry might have described as "a soggy bottom". www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/27914574Sussex now lye 6th in the Championship table on 98 points, just 20 points away from the two leaders. www.espncricinfo.com/county-championship-div1-2014/engine/series/691689.html?view=pointstable

Nash's second fifty ain't it? Melded? You can't just go around making up words Fluffy, that would be ospantitious of you. That said, if anyone is ospantitious on here it's you ya flegamite!
It's a fair cop though, I've said my bit on the pitch, which we have 'nothing' to do with. A decent enough result for us if nothing else.
