Despite perceived weaknesses in batting we put on a big total against Gloucester, certainly helped by their being two bowlers light, and bowled well in three crucial sessions, on the first morning and the final afternoon and evening. We have to improve on that against Glamorgan, low though their standing is they have obdurate batsmen and some good medium-fast bowling.
Ideally if Machan is fit he must play in place of Davis, who will surely want to forget his many ignominies, at 4 or 5. I still think Wiese is more of a 7 or 8 than a top-order player but things are as they are. That leaves a replacement for Jordan that does not lengthen the tail. The story of both of the last two games has been of strong late-middle order support boosting a total to a position of strength. Archer did very well against Essex but was sold a dummy by Brown before he had a chance against Glos. A last three of Briggs, Garton and Magoffin, or Briggs, Magoffin and Whittingham would put a lot of pressure on Archer to make a substantial score.
However it looks as if Briggs will play regardless of his strike rate of 104.7 and his lack of tactical nous. We will have to hope that the bubble of confidence created at Hove can be sustained in different circunstances and that all chances are taken. It would be nice to hear from Sussex that Lewis has been working with the bowlers on limiting the amount of runs given away through overstepping and through bowling inaccurately so as to increase the number of byes. Extras is averaging just short of 30 this year, with 68% of its handsome total of 501 coming from byes and no-balls.

I wonder if anyone has any general statistical information on extras? Conceding 30 per innings is a massive disadvantage. What is the average extras score per team? It is my perception that Yorkshire rarely concede double figures which must reflect some bowling discipline.

No reason Sussex cannot win this one.
Also Klinger has announced he will miss the final two CC games for Glos, including the last game of the season v Sussex at Bristol. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Sussex could go into that game knowing that if they win and Kent and Essex only draw at Canterbury, they might end up as Div Two champions.
Amazing given that a week ago it seemed that Sussex's season was over, but there is currently still everything to play for...
However, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I reckon Sussex needs to win two of the games v Glamorgan, Essex, Kent and Worcs before we can start dreaming of an improbable triumph on the last day of the season!

Without Joyce and Jordan for key matches I think we can kiss any chance of promotion goodbye.

Without Joyce and Jordan for key matches I think we can kiss any chance of promotion goodbye. I don't think we really do have any chance of promotion anyway. I assume that Joyce will miss the Kent and Leicestershire games becaue of the 50 over and then T20 games between Ireland and Hong Kong, and Jordan will miss Glamorgan and Kent definitely for the 50 over games, and probably the Leicestershire game if he is picked fro the T20 on 7 September. Although Jordan can be very effective we do have more back up in the fast bowling department than in the batting, where it really looks like Salt or nothing. Even more reason to shop carefully and effectively for next season.

My preference would be for Robinson ahead of, Garton, to take over from CJ. Garton's extra pace, and left arm variation, are tempting, but Robinson's ability with the bat swings it for me. He can also bowl off spin, if we find ourselves on a turner, as Cardiff sometimes is

It is one of those things that doesn't get noticed until someone perceives it as a problem. In response to flashblade's point, it isn't always the fault of the bowlers, nor always the fault of the wicketkeeper as far as the byes element is concerned. However when it reaches such high proportions regularly it is the responsibility of the captain to look at what is happening and work with the coach to resolve it. It has certainly got worse as the season has gone on. In the first game against Northants when they scored 481, extras were only 25 (5.2%) including 5 penalty runs. In the next game against Essex extras were around 7% of the total in both innings. In the last 4 innings bowled by Sussex extras have been more than 10% of the total each time.

hh Thanks for offering to undertake this task. I would not know where to begin but I think the results will be worth your efforts. They may even disprove the notion that Sussex are particularly generous with donating extras. However I have noted for the last few seasons that Yorkshire have conceded remarkably few when I have been watching and I am sure that does equate to a disciplined bowling attack.

I would think that it's usually down to the bowler or wicketkeeper when byes are given. Who's fault is it when leg byes are given? I'd say it's the batsman, because he's attempted a stroke, missed the ball, and it's pinged away randomly!

It's nobody's fault when leg byes are given is it Flash, especially not the batsman. It's runs on the total so why would it be a fault of his? Dumbo. I think you will find that the issue with us and sundries all comes down to no-balls, and the ungodly amount we have sent down over the last few seasons. We lead that table I will confidently state, without specific information.
Talking of godly rubarb, I think it was Jesus who once said; "Don't pick bowlers to bat, unless you wanna draw all the time." Wise words from a man who just wanted to water ski and feed people. An extreme chef maybe.
Garton in for Jordan.

The squad has just been released: Jofra Archer Danny Briggs Ben Brown (wkt) Christian Davis George Garton Ed Joyce Steve Magoffin Chris Nash Abi Sakande Phil Salt Luke Wells David Wiese Luke Wright (c) "Harry Finch, Matt Machan and Stu Whittingham are all missing through injury..." and Chris Jordan is away with the England one day squad. Well though they played against Gloucester and I'm sure their spirits are buoyed, I can't really think the title of their release is anything more than a bit of puffery. www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/preview-unbeaten-sussex-aiming-for-strong-championship-run-inSakande and Davis to miss out, with Salt to bat at 5, Brown and Wiese, then Jofra and a slightly longer tail.

I must admit, I have been wondering whether releasing the squad was the answer to our problems. Keep the young quicks though.
Why Davis over Salt? He's done nothing, give Salt a go.
At last, this squad suggests that Garton will play, halleluiah. Enjoy watching Garton and Archer run in if you're going, whoever you are - yeah you.
