At last, a response with thought and fire. Well said Leedsmartlet, I didn't think this tepid unresponsive message board had it in it. Some good arguments but I will say: 1. I definitely don't mean Philander - a proper quality legitimate overseas and we will miss him. I definitely do mean Wiese, along with a host of other journeymen, has-beens and Kolpaks turning up over the years to play instead of young home-grown talent - Thomas, Lewis, Keegan, Sandri, Voros, Davis, Rippon... the list is endless and so are the failures. 2. What Wright has done in the field with his tactics really isn't a good counter when you consider that the bloke stepped down mid season. Nash may be more attacking for all I know but only a fool would not have enforced the follow on with that weather forecast. 3. And he showed he should have played in all of those games not 4 out of 8. How many CC games has he played this year? 4. Yeah fair enough dire's the wrong word. Dire was the right word for the two previous campaigns but this year, when it mattered, we failed and it was predictable that we would. Progress but minimal. 5. Garton getting picked for the Lions, who are very strong and would batter Sussex, to me shouts out - pick Garton more. Yes he's young, he needs handling, resting and so on. But the thing he needs most of all is game time. 6. That's a clear example of what young home-grown players are up against. Ten poor overs on the back of 300 odd good ones last year and off to the scrapheap with you. If our own talent was allowed to make the same mistakes as our imports we'd be a much stronger team. Good to hear your responses liquidskin. Hopefully we'll see one of Garton and Whittingham play the rest of the CC games - Whilst Philander is a quality player, the signing was not exactly what we needed (although the injuries to Magoffin changed things) The captain issue is something I can't decide on - no candidate is jumping out to me.

The Championship average for our most senior batsman, Chris Nash, tells a story.
10 innings, 169 runs, average 16.9, just one fifty. Should Davis drop him to the 2nd XI to help him rediscover his form? Could Salt take his place?

No. He's in lousy form, probably overtired from the effort of organising and attending all of these testimonial functions, and has just had the unwanted burden of the captaincy dumped on him. He's doing his best with all of this, as he always has done. He may come good with a 300, as Goodwin did in his benefit year, making 40% of his runs in one innings, and he may help to show by example, with loyalty and dependability, how the others can fulfil their talent. Droppingn him can do no good to anyone.

59 runs to win and 7 wickets left, surely we are going to win this one which means Sussex are back in the chasing pack again. Great to see Wells embracing his major talent more consistently now. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/cricket/40113913

Well done Wells. Almost there to a third century and saw the side home.

Yes well batted Wells but MOTM must be Archer.

For those feeling complacent about this third victory (and second consecutive) the table doesn't give much promise. Sussex are now 6th, 10 points behind Glamorgan and 20 points behind Northampton. To get to Kent's status at second, would require 2 maximum points victories with nothing for either Kent or Worcestershire and precious little for Glamorgan or Northants. The last faint flicker of hope for promotion was extinguished by the warm jets of Darren Stevens at Tunbridge Wells.

Great win, against all odds, well done Sussex. We are still in there as far as promotion is concerned, again we'll have to defy the odds to do it, but we have a chance. Will we go for it? That's the big question, we will now be without Philander and Magoffin, so if we have the ambition, let's get in an overseas, and give it a shot

hhs,
A sobering table. Just shows how a poor start to the season can leave a side in permanent catch-up mode.
Even so, another good win with Wells showing his class in Division 2. Disappointed for Wright who should have seen through the match and I believe it was one of his inimitable and indisciplined wafts on the off-side which led to the catch and his wicket. Poor from Wright and like Nash seemingly can't get going this season even without the burden of Captaincy.
Archer the obvious hero. Delighted to hear that the Windies have made no advances to date. Oh, and VDP did pretty good too. He swung the match for us.

dec,
Yes, that table looks a lot more attractive. One more big win against Gloucestershire (I note it's the FL match) and we are back in the pack.

One glance at the bowling averages though, tells you that we'll need to get some support in to help Archer. What he has achieved so far, is nothing short of phenomenal, and if he continues this sort of form, he will end up with 80 championship wickets in his first full season. However, it's unlikely that his progress will remain uninterrupted, and at some point he may suffer an injury, or a downturn in form. He's a young lad, and we shouldn't expect him to singlehandedly carry our bowling hopes We need to get him some support. Hopefully CJ will get better and we can expect some decent cameos from the younger lads, but in the meantime, we need to use the OS route bolster our ranks Who knows, we might even then be able to give Archer a rest
