Not, despite the sayings of Mark Davis, a "must-win" game; Sussex ran out of those some today ago and Northants was the last credible "must not lose". Now that all credibility has gone, and with it any faint hopes of promotion, the purpose of this game, and the others remaining is to show what Sussex can do and need to do with their squad to do better next year. I have no idea whether there are plans to address the coaching problems, though I sincerely hope Rob Andrew and his Chairman will do so, but we can at least take the opportunities offered by chance and lack of form to field a side of genuine hope and enthusiasm.
This is NOT the team I expect Sussex to play, but I think it is a good side and ought to beat Derbyshire, although the weather forecast isn't promising. I've put a brief explanation for their inclusion alongside each name, and welcome comments, opposition, criticism etc
Robson - Promising 70 odd and then got out, just as he did at Leics though a Leics supporter tells me he thought he would come very good...let's see Finch - Could play lower in the order but has made good runs opening and deserves to be in the side. I think he has the class to overcome a few low scores. Wells - Great form when played at No 3, then when Nash made his comeback to form at 4 and Wells opened again his form streak tailed off. Van Zyl - Another whose best positions are 4 and 5, where he makes solid unspectacular runs. Putting him to open or face the new ball is not clever. Nash - Good at 4 or 5 and a delight to see him back in form in his benefit year, confounding the stats. Brown - I would ask him to bat at 6 and hand the gloves to Burgess. He has a lot on his plate and we need the batting most. Burgess - A good find this year and a puzzle that he was thrown out of contention when Brown was fit. He bats well and keeps very tidily. Robinson - Batsman, medium pacer who probes and bowls good length, and his off-spin might be useful if the pitch does offer anything Archer - Yes, he should bat higher but will have to do a lot of bowling once again. Garton - As far as I know he is fit, has no other commitments, and is a complete cricketer - excellent field and useful lower order bat. He must play, Sakande - Another good natural cricketer and looked sharp on the occasions when he did get past the radar
Twelfth Man - Rawlins, another who deserves more opportunities, as batsman and as spinner.

That's a well reasoned selection, HHS. I particularly like your views on Burgess and Jordan. BTW, will you be attending any days of this match? I'm aiming to go on Tuesday, and then see how it goes from there.

As much as I'd like that to be the team hh, I suspect it will be the same as the Northants team except Garton or Sakande will come in for Jordan who will be unavailable because of England duties.

Totally agree with the thinking, probably not the four man attack - no real need with the 6,7,8,9 we can have.
Time to try Salt. We know about Burgess and Van Zyl. Whittingham and Garton should be playing and should have been playing considerably more all season. I also bet it's the same old team but would go with this myself.
Robson Salt Wells Finch Nash Brown Robinson Archer Beer Garton Whittingham
Lose a host of has-beens or never-will-bes and use the corn to fund an OS opener and you've got yourself a winning team for next season. Need to lose the 'Coach' first mind.
Peace out everybody, I'm off on holiday to Biggleswade.

We could actually field a fairly competitive side using only Sussex Academy graduates
Salt Haines Wells Nash Finch Brown Rawlins Beer Garton Sakande Whittingham

We could actually field a fairly competitive side using only Sussex Academy graduates Salt Haines Wells Nash Finch Brown Rawlins Beer Garton Sakande Whittingham They've all played at a good level, probably not enough for some of them, but the point is how they approach the game. That's a bit of coaching, in the mindset they need to have and the obvious fitness and technical preparation, and a lot of it the trust they have in the captain on the field and his patience and judgement.

I suspect you are right although Whittingham played at Worcestershire ahead of Garton and Sakande. Garton was rested for the Worcester game because Mills was injured and we were keeping him fresh for the T20's. Whittingham and Sakande have both played 2 CC games this season Sakande 5 wickets @ 30 whittingham 3 wickets @ 49 Garton hasn't played a CC game yet but he'd be my pick of the 3 because of his performances for the Lions and, as hh says, he's superb in the field. I think with all the talk of him recently as an outside chance of going to the Ashes we have to play him otherwise someone else will.

What more has Whittingham got to do? Takes Sri Lankan wickets for Scotland. After a nightmare game at Trent Bridge for all Sussex bowlers, goes back to the 2nd XI and becomes the leading wicket-taker for Sussex and indeed in the championship. What more can you ask? Oh, I know : for a coach and a captain with vision.

Oh, I know : for a coach and a captain with vision. I agree, he couldn't have done much more in the 2nd XI. Our problem is that we have too many bowlers who all bowl the same right arm medium fast/fast medium. Robinson, Archer, Magoffin, Jordan, Wiese, Sakande and Whittingham. It's unlikely that Davis will drop Wiese, and Robinson, Archer and Jordan pick themselves on weight of wickets and because they are all-rounders who add to the batting.
