Let's be brutally honest this Sussex team neither nor deserves to be promoted.

Trouble is, if we get a sub par score our bowling is not good enough to contain the runs. We can still draw this game if we bat very very well in our 2nd innings.

Highly disappointing session and you can see our season slipping away slowly and painfully. I think our season has been slipping away since May! Durham are obviously the superior team so our struggles in this game are no surprise but there’s been a malaise affecting us for months now. Would love to hear the uncensored views from Paul Farbrace as to what keeps dragging us down. We seem to have lost our way since the start of the One Day Cup and would have appeared to have brought our poor form and everything that went with it into our final run of Championship fixtures. I could be proved wrong as you quite rightly say SP, Durham are the stand out team in the group and we could recover in our final three matches against more even opposition, although on the evidence of the last two days that is doubtful. I don't think the malaise set in as far back as May as the T20 was always going to be a struggle given the vast turnover of players in previous seasons and what we were asking/expecting from an inexperienced group in that format. For once CP is I fear correct, I am not convinced we are ready to get promoted, although more importantly not good enough to compete and survive in a stronger more competitive division. The experiment with the youth has been an interesting and on occasion enjoyable journey, however, I believe we have reached a point where some harsh truths and even bigger decisions surrounding their futures with the club need to be made. No doubt everyone has their own thoughts, but we need to determine those who are good enough, those who may be worth persevering with a little longer and those we need to cut loose. Then comes the bigger problem, identifying available quality experienced replacements and recruiting them to the Club. I believe Farbrace is the man for the job, but this is not going to be an easy or quick process.

I can name you 2 batsman who are better than what you have apart from Pujara. They don’t play much for us.
Ryan Patel and Ben Geddes. Surely you must sign one of them if not both next season.

Unfortunately we’re not in a position to tempt either high quality experienced players or the best young prospects away from other clubs. We have to hope we get lucky with players that other counties don’t prioritise such as Alsop and before that Robinson. Maybe Patel and Geddes would fall in that category.
However, we’ll never be able to do this on a large scale so we have no choice other than to develop the best talent already in our system. We also need a more coherent approach to recruiting overseas players.
We should take some inspiration from Leicestershire who’re enjoying a revival after many years in the doldrums. It is possible.

Ibrahim found form then found himself out of the side, hes probably a better bowler than Crocombe too.
I will say it again, the Head Coach can no longer do it all on his own, Farbs has to take his head out of the clouds and allow a DOC to take the burden off of him.

I don't know a lot about Geddes Steve, but from the small sample size of just 6 first class matches, with two hundreds and an average of 37.33, definitely worth a punt. Less convinced on Patel, averaging under 17 from 7 innings this season, career average of 28.55 from 51 matches, not sure he would improve on what we already have. Would take Amar Virdi or Dan Moriarty off you without a second thought as an upgrade on our current spin options. I would also suspect there are one or two seam bowling options within your ranks who can't get a game who would be of possible interest. Interestingly, our former player Harry Finch is currently averaging over 44 in Division One with a century and two fifties from his six innings this season.

I try to resist singling out individual players for specific criticism, but have to question on current form how Crocombe and Carson got two and three year contract extensions. As per my earlier post, I thought Ibrahim would have got the nod ahead of Crocombe in the eleven for this match. Strengthens the batting and offers a further bowling option.

Between us we've sparked Crocs into life 😄😁😆😅 On that same basis, I am equally at a loss as to how our top six batters warrant their current contracts!! Typical, even Carson looked better in his last spell. More seriously though, we needed Crocombe to produce at the start of the innings and with the second new ball. His first twelve overs 12-0-72-0. His last six overs 6-1-21-4. The match had gone and there was no pressure on him or the batters who were looking for quick runs.

We look a batsman light to me, I'd like Carter 7 and FHP 8.

They have to bat 3 and a half more sessions minimum to escape from this game with a draw. I cant see it happening and I'm desperately hoping I'm wrong.
Would a draw paper over cracks again though!

The difference between where we are and where we need to get to could not be demonstrated any better than a comparison between the two sides in this match. Lees comfortably over 1200 runs for the season, Potts and Raine 50 wickets apiece and still two games to play. A good blend of experience and youth. Five players in and around the England under 19 set up. We have a long way to go to get promotion and maintain a place in the top division. Having said that, there has been improvement this season, but a combination of players out of form, youngsters not yet ready, a need for more experienced established recruitment and some I am sorry to say not good enough explain why we are most likely to fall short.
