I still have faith in Tom Clark for the number 5 slot. He’s been forced to play as a makeshift opener for most of this season which hasn’t helped him to shine. We definitely need more depth in the batting though and particularly another genuine opener. I’d be unhappy if we didn’t sign an overseas opening bowler next year but please, please, please let it be someone who can play the whole season. Who do you ditch then ? Alsop ? Haines? Orr? Coles? Pujara? Clearly not everyone is good enough because we have only won once this season. I think Clark is one of those who would have to go if the club is serious about making tough decisions. He has had plenty of chances and not done much, particularly when it matters. There is a chance his release could backfire and he does well elsewhere. Thems the breaks. More likely he carves out a living in Div Two somewhere. Generally, I don’t think it’s that helpful to make individual cases for keeping each player. You will find qualities and good performances in all of them (albeit not consistently), and end up keeping them all in the hope they will eventually improve. It is more interesting to look on it as there being only so many seats on the boat, so would you rather have that player or that player. I dont think there has been a debate where people are making cases to keep a whole host of players. I dont think we need to be losing any players at this point but need to bolster so our younger players have the right platform in the 2nd XI to develop.

Clarks averaging 26 and only gone past 50 12 times in 62 innings, the stats dont back up his ability I agree but currently he cannot command that number 5 position therefore we require that position to be filled. I'm not saying we shouldnt sign an overseas bowler, but what i mean is i'd rather have 2 overseas players who can play the majority of the season rather than short periods of time which hasnt worked this season. He scored 765 runs at an average of just over 33 in the championship last year, playing mostly in his preferred position in the middle order. He hasn’t been at his best this season but then very few have including Haines and Orr (when fit). Something has held performances back and I’d rather get to the bottom of that than release young players who have proven their talent even if not consistently enough. I agree that Clark’s case is marginal but as you suggest in a later post, our depth is currently wafer thin so let’s resolve that first.

I was responding to Therea’s post which had a place to fill at number 5. Actually I would have Clark as backup, play Coles at 5 and put Karvelas in if I was selecting from our current squad. As I’ve said elsewhere I’d be searching for new recruits for 2024 to bolster our options. If we have great success in that (and I’m sceptical) then we could be more ruthless with our current players.

Farbrace now saying what we were all saying 4 years ago. Experienced players with a few youngsters. What about Luke Wells and Ben Brown. Exactly. Grubby and Squeaky should hang their heads in shame listening to their own head coach slate their philosophy. Shameful what they’ve done to this county

Crocombe now has 18 wickets @ 32. Carson has 21 wickets @ 51. Perception of Carson's performance on this messageboard is for some reason, unbeknown to me, far more favourable than Crocombe. Crocombe picks up a lot of cheap wickets bowling at the tail with his pace. Very rarely does he dominate an opposition and wear them down over a long period of time with accuracy. But we have struggled to bowl tailenders out in the past. Crocombe deserves to play.
