We are about to find out whether Sussex perform better or worse in front of a crowd, albeit a reduced capacity crowd. After getting hammered at Northampton recently when the two teams met, Sussex will be keen to put things right on home soil. While Lancashire and Yorkshire lead the table, last week produced two drawn games. Lancashire's game at Northamptonshire barely got out of the starting blocks with 34.3 overs bowled in the whole match. Kent and Glamorgan tried manufacture a result by declaring early, but the rain meant that Glamorgan and Kent lost bonus points rather than getting anywhere near a result.
The table after each team has played 6 or 7 games out of 10 is as follows:
Yorkshire - Played 6, 101 points Lancashire - Played 6, 98 points Glamorgan - Played 7, 80 points Northamptonshire - Played 6, 76 points Sussex - Played 6, 64 points Kent - Played 7, 61 points
Sussex need a good result against Northamptonshire to have any chance of getting in the top two. However, Yorkshire and Lancashire still have to play each other twice, so one of the top two places could easily be grabbed by the following pack.
To get a win against Northamptonshire, Sussex will need to improve greatly on their performance against Northamptonshire earlier in May. In that game, Sussex were bowled out for 101 and 215 and lost by an innings and 120 runs. After last week's washout against Lancashire, Northants will be looking to move up the group table. They lost to Yorkshire by one run earlier in May and have only suffered one defeat to date this season - against Lancashire.
Ricardo Vasconcelos, Adam Rossington and Robert Keogh have all scored runs consistently this season while Gareth Berg has picked up 20 wickets to date.
Can Sussex find some form and pick up a much-needed win? We are just going to have to wait and see, I guess.
Other game in our group this week
Lancashire v Yorkshire (Old Trafford)

Presumably Ollie Rob won’t be available and we still have few bowlers with injuries plus Phil Salt.

There’s certainly enough bowlers to draw on there, Joe. If Ollie is unavailable, as expected, we will have a number of options to rotate the attack.
Head on a the block here, but I have a good feeling about this match.

Thomason Haines van Zyl Head Clark Brown Rawlins Garton Meaker Carson Crocombe I hope Ali Orr plays. Will send a good message that a young batsman getting runs gets an opportunity. No room for Delray. He has had too many opportunities now.

Thomason Haines van Zyl Head Clark Brown Rawlins Garton Meaker Carson Crocombe With no Archer and Robinson we need five bowlers. We tried 7 batsmen and 4 bowlers at Northants and got stuffed. When you play the extra it invariably backfires as everyone leaves it to the next batsmen until you are all out! I expect Atkins, Crocombe and Meaker to come in for Archer, Rawlins and Robinson. If we play as rubbish as we did at Northampton we will be stuffed again! I bet Sanderson and Berg can't wait to bowl to our useless batsmen. More easy wickets for the pair. I fear another innings defeat is on the cards as we are arguably currently have the weakest squad in county cricket.

Ali Orr hopefully gets the chance he deserves been getting runs in the 2s and for Eastbourne should play instead of Delray 🏏🏏🏏

Pleased to see Matt Prior back in a consultancy/coaching capacity to help get 'the winning mentality back' at the club. Should help the recent spate of poor body language from some players following dismissals. A real positive.

I’m disappointed Chris Jordan won’t be available. Sounds as if it’s only a matter of time before he’s on a white ball only contract.

The brave shout is for Rawlins and Meaker to miss out. Let's see. The sensible shout. Not for a batsman though, Garton at seven and five proper bowlers please. I haven't seen the squad, where's Hunt? What did he do wrong a month ago? Orr for Clarke maybe.

ATMIT though, which is an abbreviation of at this moment in time (I wanted to save time) I would be using Jordan, for real. Which means definitely, I think.

Personally think that most players should be contracted to be available for Championship and 50 over cricket as standard, as that's where team spirit, confidence and match fitness are cultivated. It helps the younger players too, as well as having benefits for other competitions also.
Really hope Chris will play a couple of CC games this season.
That in mind .... anyone looking forward to watching Sussex in person again ?!?
