That momentum didn't last long. Problems are plentiful but without stating the obvious again I'm pretty sure that if neither of your openers are scoring any runs you will more often than not struggle. Add your captain and possibly best batsman to that and you're approaching a disaster.

Sadly it wasn't a false dawn. The light (at the end of the tunnel) WAS a train coming the other way. Two trains. Denley & Darren. I made it to to leafy Kent on Friday (despite my misgivings about sub-standard facilities at out grounds) and thought the bowling start pretty good on that wicket. Then they got away in the afternoon and by evening had escaped. Saturday, thank God, was viewed from the safety of Brighton watching England's Great Escape. I don't think I could have sat through the Tunbridge disappointment. There is no spine or direction to this team. Talent there is and it showed against Durham, but it's not being used properly. I don't know what the solution is but change there must be. Rob Andrew is always around - he must know unless he's deaf AND blind. And before anybody says 'there's always the T20' .... well .... just don't!

I'm afraid the deadwood needs cutting out.
1. Head coach, ultimately responsible for the overall performance of the team. We all said give him a chance last year, let him rebuild and hopefully consolidate this year. It's not happening, it's the same woeful underperformance time and again. It's not even the end of May but our promotion hopes are all but over.
2. Fielding coach, ultimately responsible for our performance in catching and ground fielding. One or two games would have gone our way but for dropped catches and fumblings in the field.
3. Batting coach, speaks for itself. We have talented batters in our squad but they are not performing to that talent.
4. Captain, leads a team by example, leads from the front, rallies the team in the field. All absent from our club captain.
Something needs to be done NOW, not after we've reached the depths of despair that we did last season.
No professional sportsman with any amount of ambition will stay at a club who have lost the will to win. The likes of Archer, Whittingham and Garton will be off to further their careers elsewhere.

I disagree with 3 as Yardy has helped enhance Wells' game as evidenced by his 258 last week. However, the rest could go! Garton and Whittingham don't get a game because we go with a Kolpak instead. Why open with Finch when you have Wells?

I've been saying all of that over the last year but it's too extreme for most people so good luck with that, and welcome to the Asylum.
Because we've signed the wrong players Garton and Whittingham can't even get a game at Sussex and develop like they should be. The management's target areas for strengthening were inexplicably wrong in the close season. We should have a young vibrant team with an overseas bat and Garton & whittingham playing regularly. Instead we have an ageing, unwilling group of Kolpaks and journeymen has-beens and several too cosy mainstays plodding along without direction.
I think the biggest thing we can do now without seeming crazy is relieve Wright of the captaincy and sort the OS out when Philander's done. Play the youngsters more, especially Garton and Whittingham, get Finch in the middle order, give Robson a go and not a lot else. All that would be positive though.

On the subject of the match itself: I was surprised that Sam Northeast didn't enforce the follow on yesterday, particularly in the light of the forecast of heavy rain on days 3 and 4. Kent fans will be furious if the weather allows Sussex to escape with a draw. I sincerely hope that Northeast's decision wasn't influenced by someone in a blazer and panama who thinks the commercial outcome of the festival is more important than the result of the match.

Of Course it was! They have previous for this! If that's true then it'll serve them right if it p***** down with rain and ruins both the match and the festival profitability! Do any of our Kent members have a view on this?

A lead of over 450 going in to lunch. Will that be enough for Northeast or will they completely bat us out of the game and declare on 550?

Sussex 8-3. Wells out for 0 after facing 8 balls. From hero to zero in less than 5 days. At this rate, the match could be over by 6pm tonight. Sussex require another 495 runs. Stevens out 'Dawn French's' Nash. Embarrassing. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/scorecard/ECKO41327

We would do better putting out the Sussex blind team! An overseas opener for the second half of the season is needed as Finch is not an opener.

Thank goodness Van Zyl is showing some backbone (presently 72*). The Festival organisers must feel relieved as the game will now last to a 4th day.
