The squad: Jofra Archer Will Beer Danny Briggs Michael Burgess (wkt) Harry Finch Chris Jordan Steve Magoffin Chris Nash Delray Rawlins Vernon Philander Stiaan van Zyl Luke Wells David Wiese Luke Wright (c) Beer in "to boost the spin bowling options", but if the pitch and the outfield are as they were last summer it will be more toil for little reward. The Sussex News item www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/preview-sussex-head-to-kent-on-back-of-comfortable-durham-victory also boosts Magoffin's chances after his knee injury, but I think the side against Durham offers the best chance of any success if the pitch is docile. It might be better to opt for the toss in the hope of batting first and making some more substantial runs against a Kent bowling combination that hasn't really found consistency. Stevens will always be a nagger and Coles is a genuine fast bowler, with the temper and ego to go with it, but the rest seem not really to have their heart in it.

69-3 looks like a more than acceptable lunch score for Sussex, especially when they (unsurprisingly) elected to toss and Kent equally unsurprisingly batted on winning it Anyone on the ground who can comment further?

Kent 316-8. Pretty good for Sussex given the wicket is a similar flat pancake to last season. Only one century and Fabian from the Cowdrey clan reckons it's a good day for Sussex and one they should be "very pleased with." Hear hear from me and hear hear from him. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CU5UPi7STk

I spent the day at TW yesterday. It was a very slow start, which I attributed to our brilliant bowling, but the pace gathered in the afternoon. I came away reflecting that the wicket had improved over last year's shocker, and then I saw this link to this morning's article in The Times www.thetimes.co.uk/article/fears-over-state-of-pitch-in-tunbridge-wells-hrjstfl8xI registered with the site, and here is the full article: You would not think it yesterday, beneath a cloudless sky and with a crowd of 3,000 glorying in the Nevill Ground’s timeless beauty and the sight of old rivals straining for opening-day superiority, but the Tunbridge Wells cricket festival is under threat. It may be celebrating its 105th year, but there may not be many happy returns unless the local council, which owns the ground, can convince Kent that it is serious about retaining the county club’s annual visit. A week ago, because of the poor state of the outfield and inadequate covering by council-employed groundstaff, who allowed heavy rain to flood the pitch, this match was close to being switched to Canterbury. Dry weather, and the efforts of Kent’s own groundstaff, saved the festival — while it also took much hard labour from Tunbridge Wells cricket club officials. “It is our often-stated policy to take cricket around the county, and everyone loves coming to the Nevill for this traditional annual visit,” Jamie Clifford, the Kent chief executive, said. “But recent events were unacceptable and we need the risk taken out of coming here — we cannot again be left wondering if we can actually stage the game a week or so beforehand.” On a pitch that always interested Sussex’s seam quartet, Joe Denly survived an early concerted appeal for a catch behind to anchor a determined Kent batting effort, with 119 in almost five and a half hours. It was an innings full of grit but also studded with a string of superbly timed drives through extra cover and down the ground. If many of Denly’s 16 fours were memorable, the eight sweetly struck by Darren Stevens in a run-a-ball 44 screamed of a man in prime form; besides the small matter of 24 wickets at 12.91, this remarkable 41-year-old now has 440 championship runs this season at an average just below 63. Will Gidman, who made a measured 42, also did his bit for the Kent effort, as did Joe Weatherley and Adam Rouse.Does anyone else have a view on this?

Well, that's Kent all out for 369 - more than I would have liked, but Kent do bat right down to no.11. I can't help thinking we need another massive score to win this one as it will be hard to bowl out Kent on what is usually a placid wicket. Fingers crossed that the runs flow as they did at Hove v. Durham.

A career best of 259 from Wells would be welcome right now.

103 for 6. I'm glad I enjoyed the win over Durham, but today's play looks like it will kill any thoughts about getting into the top two this year.
