Thank goodness Van Zyl is showing some backbone (presently 72*). The Festival organisers must feel relieved as the game will now last to a 4th day. Oh fluffy....why did you have to do that?

WTF is Jordan batting at 7? He is batting like a number 11!

Poor old Jordan. He seems to have forgotten what a bat looks like. His last three innings: Faced 22 balls: Scored 1 run.

One of the players who has emerged with some credit in recent weeks is Michael Burgess. Whenever I've seen him, he looks like a decent batsman, and perhaps more interesting, his wicket keeping is very tidy indeed. Is he the best wicketkeeper in the squad?

On the subject of the match itself: I was surprised that Sam Northeast didn't enforce the follow on yesterday, particularly in the light of the forecast of heavy rain on days 3 and 4. Kent fans will be furious if the weather allows Sussex to escape with a draw. I sincerely hope that Northeast's decision wasn't influenced by someone in a blazer and panama who thinks the commercial outcome of the festival is more important than the result of the match. Of Course it was! They have previous for this! I've been at all three days, and as the time approached for Northeast to decide about enforcing the follow on yesterday I was firmly of the view that he shouldn't. Both Stevens and Coles had bowled 17 overs in the midday heat (and boy was it hot!), poor old 41 year old Stevens without a break if memory serves. To have asked them immediately to try to do it again would have been too much, with attendant risk of injury, handing the initiative back to Sussex etc. Isn't there an old cricketing saw "Never enforce a follow on on the strength of a weather forecast"? As for commercial interest dictating the decision, that is laughable. In the many years I have attended the TW match a long tradition has been maintained: no one attends the fourth day. The cost of stewarding would exceed receipts.

AS,
How many times has the fourth day at TW been a bank holiday?

I watched a few of the preseason games and he seems like a fast paced scoring batsman, and is now impressing by showing a tough strong mental side. He seems to be a technically very gifted keeper, probably more so than Brown, but we all know that's not what counts now. I really like him, and if he keeps getting chances and taking them, he might *whisper it quietly* prevent Brown from walking straight back in. I think in the championship matches he's done well, but due to our awful top order too often batsmen like him, Weise and Archer are thrown to wolves, in far too early, or too low a score late in the innings so that by the time they do come in they're not able to bat themselves in. I've felt in recent weeks Burgess, Archer and Weise (I know he's unpopular as a KOLPAK) have done themselves no disgrace, but are too often let down elsewhere.

Yes, some belated resistance, but probably too little, too late.

It would, of course, be ridiculous to hope that Burgess, Wiese (and Archer, Philander, Briggs) could continue to play calmly and without loss until the weather intervened. Which is why I don't mention it but simply post this:

Hmm, a generous helping hand, but batting for two hours, is probably beyond us

Could there be a delayed start due to a wet outfield? It is a club ground after all.

In theory it shouldn't be too hard for us to bat a session. But never play cricket to the weather forecast. It tends to make fools of us all. Also, Kent will come flying out knowing about the forecast. And with no need to defend runs, it'll be full cordon, catchers round the bat, anything that ups the wicket taking chances.
